Any one taken the glass out of the mirrors, without breaking it?

get a hole saw and drill out the plastic then you can push out the glass from behind without damaging it.
hope this helps :smt003

Not necessarily as daft as it sounds, since my cunning plan involves drilling the plastic at some point any way.

Probably not using a hole saw though, so back in yer box.

Well it would if you're putting the indicators in there :smt002

Are you installing some LED units or poking individual LEDs through their own little holes?

(Let me know how you get on removing the mirror glass)

Not entirely sure 'till I get the glass out.

1st thoughts were individual holes for the LED's, reckon it's look better.

The more awkward bit will be running the wires. I'm thinking about drilling through the centre of the mounting bolt for the feed and using the metal of the bolt to run to earth so I can make the hole as fine as poss.

Not got a good feeling about that though.

Why have lights in the mirrors, sounds daft to me as they seem to get broken more than those without (personal experience here as I've had 2 bikes with indicators in the mirrors)

Fair point Gio, but I'll make them mesel for next to nowt. The'll be LED's so unlikely to get broken as readily as plastic lenses.

Time is money, also think this as you said about it, drilling holes in bolts fopr wiring is not the right move, you should really be thinking fibre optics with a sender unit and receiver across the bridge between bike and mirror arm.

So, with no wires running into the mirror gio, how do you propose powering the receiver unit?

wireless operated, solarpowered windicators.

See! I read Gio's mind.

It's possible. just not necessarily sensible.

Isn't a simple fibre optic sender and receiver just a pair of lens' ? :smt017

yes but you need a block to stop them waving about in the breeze

TBH I had thought of those possibilities .... recovery of energy to allow things to be self-powered is quite a hot topic these days .... however, I was thinking that Dale probably had enough of a challenge in this one without complicating it further.

There again, maybe we could fit the mirrors with a digestive system so that they could extract energy from Gio's sarnies to power the indicators.

Funnily enough I saw a wind powered light thingie for kids bikes recently.

A little fan that powers a LED array, so then I'd need a sender and receiver and a way to keep the lights flashing while stopped. I guess I could use a battery that the fan recharged when the indicators are off (most of the time really) which I guess is feasible. Might be a bit of a squeeze in the mirrors though.

Did I mention that I haven't got the glass out yet!

Erm, isn't that what the generator on the bike does anyway?
