ignition barrel question

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Wed Feb 06, 2008 10:02 pm

following a small visit from mr cock up, involving some heated grips, a switch left on, and a knackered battery, I am interested to find out if anyone has taken a power lead off the ignition lock to power an ancillary...

all info greatfully received :)

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Pete, when I get a moment I'll try to find the wiring sketches I made when I fitted my heated grips.

They are wired to only be on when the ignition is on and also require another button to be pressed to activate them so that if you've left them switched on, they don't automatically start up the next time you turn the key. Basically a simple bit of relay logic powering the grips themselves through their own relay.

I wanted to ensure I'd not have any battery flattening issues ....... :smt002

If you can find any live lead off the ignition switch ON position you can just use this to switch on a relay straight from the battery, Fuse box or whatever.
Need to have a better look at the wiring, but I reckon anything that only works with the ignition on will have a feed you can tap into.
This could include things like the feed to the brake lights, horn, indicators or all the lights, you just need to tap in before the actual switches.
Can't remember how may relays there are in the system, (usually a lot less than the everage car), so could be only one or two that fire up all these when the ignition is on.
One of these might be much easier to access than getting a link off the switch itself.
Good luck !!!!!!!

thanks chaps

i have now got the bird all back together, and have done the first clean up... now time to do some polishing etc

I have also taken a couple of pictures of where I mounted the HID ballast - they are elsewhere on this forum (Or soon will be!)

Paul/Fausto saw the bird all together earlier today... some doubt about how effective the rear indicators are but.. I may well add to them :)

I seem to have buggered the rear brake switch as well... i suspect some wd40 may be used in a vain attempt to get it all running....
