Bit of an odd one, anyone had this before?

#1 Post by hornetrider » Fri Jun 01, 2007 12:56 pm

My bike sometimes stalls after about 10 minutes of running and say, I come to a junction. A trifle annoying but I can live with it. It did it twice today and the funny thing is, it looks as though the battery has reset cos the clock in the display went back to 00:00 and the odometer/speedo reverted back to km.

Anyone had this?

Sounds like an electrical problem - it could cut your ignition as well as resetting your instrument pack.

I'd start by checking the security of your connections - at the battery, earthing points and major connectors.

If this doesn't sort it I'll think some more.

Does it only do this when you are stopped?
Does it start OK after suffering this problem?

The answers to these (and many other questions) may help us to track it down .... on the other hand, they may not .....

Thanks D-Rider.

Yes it only happens when revs drop to tick over and the bike has been running for say, less than 15 minutes or so (but warmed to 78 degrees, which is what mine stays at when warmed up). After about quarter of an hour it doesn't seem to stall at all, as if its then been warmed up "properly".

And yes it starts again fine no problem, first time. Its almost as if its just a little too cold and dies, yet I'm not sure if thats it because the temp gauge is up to a stable 78 after I'd say 3 or 4 minutes of running.

It actually stalled on the motorway a few weeks ago when I was filtering through heavy traffic... and rather than start it on the button I just let out the clutch (as I would have done on my Hornet) - big mistake! Forgot I was riding a twin and a circa 5 metre rear wheel locked skid before it kicked over certainly woke me up!!

I've mentioned it now because up til today I was thinking it was one of the bike's foibles that you have to get used to, but with the whole instrument reset thing going on I'm now not so sure.

Apart from the battery terminals itself, where else should I check?

depending on year after you've checked the battery terminals there's an earth on the right hand side of the rear cyl (looking at the clocks) even if they only tighten a quarter of a turn it's enough to give you problems.

Have you had the airbox out for any reason. Mine was cutting out last year and it turned out to be the collector from the air ducts to airbox was not positioned correctly. Somehow I had not fitted it over the ducts and it was restriciting the airflow.

Might not be yor problem but worth noting anyway

I had the same thing with the clocks and I put it down to trying to thumb the starter before the clocks had done their "thing" - which you usually do when having stalled the machine. My remedy is to let the rev counter zero and let the temp guage go to its proper reading, then thumb the starter. Never had a problem since.

mine was cutting out and i found it to be 2 wires under the tank were rubbing on the cylinder and had rubbed thru the sheath causing them too short out. 5 minute job taped up and heat shrunk all well.

worth a look on clutch side of bike.
if you can't ride it....
OR take it too bed...

IT AIN'T WORTH HAVIN...

Thanks for the feedback lads. Falcomille, you may be right, I think I may have thumbed the starter almost instantaneously so that may have caused it?

I took her out again last night and all was fine until an hour into the ride - came to a T-Junction and it just died :smt009

Do you think its worth adjusting the idle speed up a bit? Sometimes it almost seems as if it's going to stall, but it recovers. Not all the time, just randomly?

It was all the same in my case. But worse. Check if the cable connecting the alarm to ignition (im my case - RHS fusebox) is fine.
