Question for the electrically minded amongst you.

I had HID headlight unit fitted that worked fine even with a mod to the hi-beam switch, that kept the headlight on when the main beams were switched on.
The only problem was if I stalled and restarted or restarted without turning the headlight off the draw on the power put the HID out. Not too much of a problem, but I’m a committed fettler and this just wasn’t good enough.
My solution was to wire a normally closed relay in using a tap off starter relay feed from the starter button to the new relay solenoid and a wire to ground to fire relay and cut power to the HID ballast on startup. This works fine and the HID turns off when the starter button is pressed and reignites when it’s let go.
However, when I switch on the hi beams the HID goes out now, but it didn’t before.
The mod to the hi beam switch shouldn’t be the problem as it worked before and is merely a wire relocation and still uses the separate relays for the head and hi beam lights.
T’was late last night when I was testing this and only just remembered I’ve replaced the hi beam bulbs with more powerful items, but doubt that’s the problem and easily checked.
I’m thinking that instead of running the new relay solenoid current to ground (therefore in parallel with the starter relay) I should have put it in series with it, again I can easily try that.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Where's Spock when you really need him?
