Vt750s rear shock upgrade

Hi all, anyone give me any pointers for upgrading the rear shocks on a 2010 vt750s? Could I put a longer shock on or would it mess up handling? I need more cushion for my old ass the roads in UK are getting pretty dire😝 all the best Michael
