There have also been cases where poorly thought out and designed crash bungs have put a dent in the frame from a fairly minor off.

I'm not too sure I can subscribe to that theory....
Just weighed a single axle bung, 72 grams, negligible weight ( thinks me ).
As for the original suspects being a push fit, I'd not trust the buggers to hold station in the event of an off. Have seen some racing ones that don't use a go through fixing but held in place by a cam
