New sprag, new battery - still slipping.

#1 Post by KitchenSync » Mon Jul 27, 2015 12:30 pm

I should probably renew my cables - but I'm also wondering about the state of the sprag gear and outer shell surfaces as the starter is still slipping even when fully charged. Has anyone reground these to resurface them? Mine were a little rough when I rebuilt the sprag using the spring and lobes from a new KTM sprag so I'm a bit disappointed to find it's not done the job.

Jay - Blinkey may be your man for this one at the risk of stating the obvious not an oil grade issue?
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

I hope you were sold the right spring and lobes ?
I'm sure you would have noticed any knackered ring gear on reassembley. There really isn't that much complexity to the starter clutch.
Starter ring gear 'throwing out' far enough ? Will be obvious with a look at the starter.
Kin hell, this bugger is making you do more than enough back flips.

It totally gave up today - starter just spinning away. Even rocking it back and forth in gear could get it to a place where the sprag could grip for more than one turn before complaining and letting go.

The lobes and spring were from a KTM sprag - with the unhanded cage. So.I popped everything out and reassembled them in the original Aprilia cage.

Everything seemed OK at first, but it's acted like those lobes are made from chrome plated toffee, getting progressively worse over the twenty or so times I've started the bike.

Going to strip it first thing and post some pics. Need to get things ordered first thing to be ready for the weekend.

I was right about the chrome plated toffee.

Half the lobes have fractured, the rest distorted or worn. A real dogs dinner and timely warning about cost cutting. In my defence: externally it looked fine, well engineered - nothing untoward about it whatsoever.

Anyways - new sprag, shell and gear from Ultimate Parts are now in. Fed up messing around with it so just renewed everything. He cut me a good deal for the lot (plus a new filter). Very handy having a parts supplier 4 miles away.

Holy shit.

Those lobes are useless. What KTM sprag is that, surely it shouldn't give up so easily!?!

I'm betting it's not a genuine KTM part - the listing doesn't claim that it is.

Is it still under the 6 month warranty?

Probably wasn't. I've just emailed the guy but I don't suppose I'll hear back.

As I'd dropped the lobes and spring into the original cage he'll probably cite that as being the problem.

Right. The sprag clutches can be bought from Griff for around 90 quid delivered- genuine aprilia.

Your sprag clutch is shagged because the other surfaces that the sprag comes into contact with are out of tolerance?

Ring griff and buy a full sprag clutch assembly.

Do not buy from ebay as there are a lot of chinese copies out there and they are pants!!!!

The links I have posted up might be genuine aprilia but I would not take any chances?

Griff posted up a few months ago that the Chinese copies were more narrow on the cross section of the teeth.

This is the sort of thing you will need, but contact griff for the real deal, griff is sound mate and as honest as the day is long.

For £30 that can only be Chinese tat (albeit via Poland). There's cheap and there's unfeasibly cheap, and that is the latter...
