glow plugs

ok cant be bothered to google and probably wouldnt understand the answer anyway... :smt003 so glow plugs do they do anything apart from starting in a diesel engine especially say economy

just curious generally :smt017

In modern cars I don't think they do anything until temperature is below a certain degree. Sure its -2 or something.

Sorry - forgot - they also seal a hole in the cylinder head - without them you'd have no compression.

Not so much a glow plug, more a glow butt, with plug ejected forcibly.
