The joys of BMW ownership...

I've had the BMW R100Rs for about 18 months and done 15,000 miles.

Appart from normal service items I fitted a HID kit to get the lights decent the rest I've had to do.
I've replaced front wheel bearings, starter motor and solanoid, battery, diode board.

Now the gearbox is shot. That lot in total is probably going to work out the wrong side of £600.
With two winters off use the salt has had a bit of a field day as well.

Falco in nearly 8 years and 50,000 miles, apart from service items and upgrades;
a starter motor relay, a speedo sensor, a clutch release bearing. Total cost around £60. (6 winters an still looking pretty.)

The BMW is not a bad bike though and I suppose at over 20 years old and not an overly priced initial purchace, i should expect to spend a bit to get it properly sorted.
The gear box though disapointing, wasn't a big surprise as when I chanegd the gearbox oil last year it seemed pretty strange and there was a lot of swarf on the magnetic plug.

Hey ho back having the front start lifting at 90 on the daily commute.....(I jest of course :smt002 )

What was its mileage when you bought it, Keith?

Mine ('81 reg) had just over 57,000 when I bought it in 2007; did about 6,000 on it in the 16 months I had it; replaced the rear shocks & changed the fork oil - that's all, but it did need its carbs balancing. Bumped into it & its new owner at the 2010 Llangollen bike show - apart from the the carb balancing & a re-spray, he'd not had to do anything to it.

It's one of the few bikes I've had that I miss; particularly the ease with which it could be thrown into bends.

Hi Mart,

It had around 33 K on the clock when I got it. Maybe hard to be sure it was genuine but it came with a full history that checked out.

It is a nice bike to ride and is certainly very capable in the slow twisties and daily commute. It does have me wondering some times why I also have the Falco but then it lets me down occassionaly and the Falco steps up and I get another adrenelin rush.
