Interesting Meet/Ride Out Idea..

#1 Post by Willopotomas » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:58 am

... with a difference

Its not for the softies amongst us as this one is at night! Literally a Beach to Beach drive.

Start on the West Coast - Blackpool Beach, to watch the Sunset then make our way over to the East Coast - Mablethorpe, for the Sunrise, breakfast etc and can chill on the beach for a few hours.

Best done in the summer as it has the shortest nights, the driving is around 5 1/2 hours (170miles) and can be stretched out by Caffeine/toilet/rest stops along the way - no rush after all.

If there is enough interest, I'll look at a route and get something in the pipeline. No reason why we can't do this this year.. :smt001

Waddaya think?

If I was likely to do it - which I'm not! - I'd rather start one side for the sunrise and end the other side for the sunset - not a long of fun in riding in the dark! Did that one year on the National Rally, for me it removed almost everything I like about motorcycling!

..... and having done that what's the proposal for the following year? Same start and destination but the longer route - heading west via USA and all points in between?

Must admit I'm not so sure about this. Yes I ride at night but as a means of getting somewhere rather than for the pleasure of the ride .... not really going to appreciate the views ....
.... and although I do sunsets, I regard sunrise and a good chunk either side as a time for keeping my eyes closed.

Sounds like a great idea. I'm a big fan of seeing the sun rise having worked / driven through the night.

Only drawback for me would be the 4 hours (ish) of riding each side to get to and from

Can understand the reasons not to do the ride.. Mostly because we'll miss some fantastic scenery.. Also riding unknown roads at night can get a bit hairy.. BUT, the ride is just one aspect of the trip. To see the sunset on the east to then ride to the west to see the sunrise.. How many can say they've done that? Certainly something I'd like to cross off the list.

As for the sunrise to sunset ride.. That'll be a loooooong old day. Unless done in the winter when the days are shorter.. Not a huge fan of riding in freezing conditions meself. :smt001

Tis but an idea at the mo. If enough are up for it, I'll see about organising something. With the distances for most involved, it may turn in to a weekend jolly :smt004

Yeah that'd have worked for me a few decades back :smt003

Sunset on Skye

or the Silver Sands of Morar

to sunrise on the Black Isle

And some of the best biking roads in the country in between. :smt003

So Blackpool to Scarborough might be a little deflating for some.

Quite like the look of the Land's End to Lowestoft trip a la Top Gear last night. Quite spooky when we'd just been discussing it.

Think you could do it in the time without too much of a problem but 7 Hrs on the bike may be a bit of a tall order

Good on ya for suggesting it Will, interesting idea, whether i'll be allowed to do it is another thing...if you head via West Yorks i could pick up half way LOL!

A few variations would be North Wales to Mablethorpe or Blackpool to Whitby or Bridlington. Not sure of the route Blackpool down through the Pennines down to Mablethorpe and what the roads are like cross country, can understand some of the comments too about doing it durring the day

Very little experience of night riding so not sure, should be better now with the HID but getting Mrs Furygan (to be) to agree and keep the Wedding plans on track is a pretty tricky feat to accomplish!!

...by the way did you manage to chase up the heel plates...swing arm looks good fitted! :smt023
