Steering dampers

I see there's been questions asked about them on here.

I'm sure there was a thread either on the last RS version, or the one before, where someone (who was in the know) was saying that they aren't needed if you set up your bike properly.

I've not been able to find it :smt009

I've deliberately done this thread as it is a serious question and I really didn't want to derail it :smt001

Gio, was it the TRX you had? (the one that crashed)

Didnt they redesign the Mk 2 version to include a steering Damper?
Similarly dont some Ducatis come with them?

I think standard bikes dont need them, but when the rake of the steering becomes such that 'shopping trolley' wheel wobble is induced easily, then they become a necessity.

Dropping your forks thru the yokes 10mm can/will induce that, but what gets me is that manufacturers dont make the forks in such a way that they can be extended 10mm. :smt012 I could imagine that having an effect upon the bike shaking it's head so readily.

Ive never needed a steering damper on the road, although ive had times on the MZ at Lydden I think it was, that I couldve done with one.

I don't even know what a TRX looks like :smt009

I had a TDM

And yes I can see what you mean but I'm bowing to a superior knowledge when I said about it being posted on a previous RS :smt001

Ah sorry - I read what you'd written too quickly and thought of the one along these lines that's been running in the Falco section. I really wasn't trying to derail it (mmm ... maybe not the best term considering events in Cumbria :smt085 )

Hope you find the one you were looking for.

So I'm right, a properly set up bike does not need a damper and I like the reference to a "victorian solution".

Neanderthals enter this way>>>>>>>>>>>

BTW track bikes shouldn't be allowed on the road.

Oh no you're not... :smt002 Please do expand on the track bike not on road thing. I can see a lot of Ducatisti after you with shotguns...

They won't catch me :smt003 (its the lack of blood in the lower legs :smt002 )

By track bike I mean those that are solely built for track use
