Now i don't know how strange this is, but its never happened to me before.

My front tyre is wearing out faster than the rear

Now I've checked tyre pressures and looked for clues on the tyre as to why this should occur but can't find any.

So yesterday, I popped into a BMW place and asked them. They didn't know as they'd never heard of this before.

One bod suggested I stop doing stoppies, but I said the bikes got abs so unless I turn it off (not likely, unless I go off road) it can't do stoppies.

So any suggestions apart from the only one that I can think of (substandard tyre)?

Its a BMW, its just...........wierd!

Seriously tho, suspension? Set up could be causing suspension chatter which causes premature wear. Other than that, not a clue. Very strange.

I assume they are matched tyres?

Intresting comparison with a big IL4 like Blackbird. My CBR1000F with less power (135bhp) and more weight than a Blackbird, gets 6500 on the front and 6600 rear with BT020s. So more miles on the rear and less on the front than the Falco.

I would put it down to the ABS and that suspension the BM runs.

Maybe not so much the ABs.. dunno.. Maybe you know it's got ABS so put more faith in it when stopping. Having not ridden alongside you on the BM I couldnt tell and you'll probably not have noticed!

Not sure how ABS works but if its set up on both brakes if it has a bias to the front and your not very aggressive with the throttle then I guess the front would ware quicker.

Okay now I've got some imput lets run through it, the tyres are matched (Metzler Tourances) which are dual compound, hard middles, soft edges. Apart from once trying the ABS, I've not been anywhere near hard braking (mixing brakes and engine braking means I don't have to). The brakes are almost the same as the BB (dual on the handlebars and just rear on the foot) with the same split 60/40.

As for suspension chatter, I had it when the bike was new but now its one notch up on the front and about quarter turn on the rear its fine on most roads, just a bit choppy on undulating roads, which I can sort just using the rear adjustment.

It also rides IMO better 2 up unless the panniers are full, but then I have to stiffen the rear up quite a bit (makes it more like the bird was )

On the BM forum I belong to they don't know why I should be getting this either.

Well it's going to be one of the following i'd guess:

1. Poor suspension set up for You
2. Poor suspension set up for the conditions
3. Incorrect tyre pressures for You and the Bike and conditions
4. Your riding style and input.

I'd get the suspension set up properly to be honest.

If your front tyre tread is lifting up and wearing uneven (feathering) its probably your damping set up causing the problem

It is when 1 up on 99% of roads for 2 up as well, however its not for concrete roads ie M25 when its very vibey, this is a combination of tyre type and the nastyness that is the M25. I've still go to get the cross country scratching bit sorted as the suspension atm for me is a bit soft, however this isn't really an issue and I imagine is down to the very long travel on the suspension.

Off road its damn good, but I don't like it (causes too many aches and pains).

I'm told the standard suspension might last to 25k then it'll be WP front and rear as they have the best set up I'm told.

Anyway new tyre before I go off to Italy in April, see how that one lasts
