Motorcyclists ignoring tyre safety warnings

The latest road casualty figures available from the Department for Transport show that in 2008 there was a significant increase of 28 percent in the number of motorcycles involved in an accident where illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor. This dramatic rise took the tally to a three-year high of 88 accidents.

the recommendations are flawed though:

Inflate tyres to the level recommended in the manufacturer's handbook

should, i think, be the tyre manufacturers recommended levels - we know that modern tyres are crap if you use aprilias figures....

Ambiguous but I think they mean the tyre manufacturer:

"9. Check that both tyres fitted to the bike are made by the same manufacturer and have the same tread pattern "

Can't remember who it was, someone came in to me to have Puncturesafe goo put into their tyres and their rear tyre had something like 10psi less than it should have had in it, they didn't even notice from the ride over.

I often have arguments with people that seem to want to run their tyres low as they believe they work better - usually they,ve heard that track tyres are run at lower pressures and think they should do the same.

After all it only takes 2 or 3 psi drop for the handling to be noticeably different so you should never get to the stage where it drops off far without you noticing (unlike the car)
