Insurance - it always pays to phone

#1 Post by Firestarter » Thu Jul 09, 2009 10:28 am

Just sorted out the renewal for the Falco - I'll give you a brief history (by the way, I'm 31, with 7 years NCB, 6 years on a full license):

Got the renewal quote in @ £216, but they'd not listed the mods that I'd declared last year. Phoned them up, quote went skyward when they put the mods on :smt013

Been with Carole Nash before, so did an online quote with them (they've never had online when I've looked before), came up over £300, and couldn't declare the mods, so didn't bother phoning as they were way expensive without any mods. Shame, cos I fancied the R&G sliders they're offering free

Did an online job on confused.com, came up with best quote of £178, but with a wopping great excess. So, tried the next one down the list, phoned them up, they didn't have the mods passed on by confused.com, so they couldn't quote :smt013

Next best one said they can't cover against theft at work unless I'm on works' property, with some means of preventing public access :smt017 WTF?

Everything else was a lot more expensive

So, phoned Carole Nash while doing an online quote at Bennetts. Carole Nash put the mods on, came back with £336 with a £500 excess, albeit with Legal & Roadside cover. Bennetts came back very good (£180ish) until I put protected NCB on, at which point the price went up and so did the excess! Took the excess down by reducing the voluntary, got a quote at £226 with £550 excess :smt009

So, told Carole Nash this, they said they'd go and get a manual quote (i.e. from a person not a computer), was the £220 quote around what I was looking for? And they'd see if they could sort the excess.

Lo and behold, I've just re-insured with Carole Nash for the not-so-princely sum of £220, with a £200 excess, and I get the R&G upper crash protectors in the post as well! Result! :smt040

By the way, did a confused.com quote with no mods - best quote was £107 from Motorcycle Direct. But, having done more digging to get a real quote, it would seem that confused don't pass on all the info for the quote - always phone up, cos your cover might not be what you thought it was, and they might just be cheaper than what you got online!

Yes, given the trouble I had this year in getting a quote as a lot of companies seemed to believe the end of the world was nigh due to my combination of a 2:1 exhaust and a Power Commander ...... I was thinking that next year I'd ring Carole Nash given that at every show they make a big display of custom bikes - the theory being that they can hardly have an issue with people making some basic changes.

.... and on a similar subject .... I was going through my policy documents last night and some of you may remember my NCD was withdrawn entirely while my claim against a 3rd party is being settled.
Well, looking at the policy document, I should only have lost a maximum of 2 years NCD - even if when it's settled, I'm held to be partly responsible.
Think I'll be phoning up to ask them to explain and provide a refund!

Funnily enough, today I got a quote via Confused .com for £107 from Motorcycle Direct.

Don't know if it's even worth ringing them, anyone tried?

Carole Nash renewal is £265.77 £200 excess
Bennetts site = £236.16 (no breakdown - no good)
E-Bike = £397 (HA!)
Hastings = £160 but £525 excess

I'll proberbly stick with CN after using Hastings to bargain them down a bit. Think I got £40 off last year, just for ringing them with a lower quote.

Try falcon.

i did a quote on thebikeinsurer.co.uk which returned results like £378 but when i called to check it out, it would always go up by about £100 and £120.

falcon rang me, gave me a quote instantly and it was £370 confirmed. and thats with legal cover, riding other bikes and riding abroad.

Seriously impressed with them!

Get a quote withouut legal cover (which you don't need because it is a con) and watch the price come down.

I have just got back from a meeting with one of the big insurers where they admitted that even when it is free they still charge (£25 - £30 per vehicle) and in reality it is just a way for the insurers to make extra money, something I have been saying for years (for those who can remember :smt009 )

I agree with T.C. about legal cover, always thought it was a ripoff.
The first time I needed legal assistance (rear ended in a car) I went straight to a solicitor I trusted, got sorted in about 9 months, and my passengers injuries compensated 7/8 months later.
Second time (ZZR600 forced into barrier by a car) I stupidly went with legal cover, it took over 2 years, no injuries involved.
Never again!

Saying that, my new CN policy comes with legal cover, can't opt out, but I wouldn't use it.

You can if you insist because they are still charging you.

You cannot be forced to take something you don't want, if they do contact the FSA (Financial Services Authority)
