Buying a 125

After much trying to persuade her that she should get her bike license (mainly in the hope that she'll catch the bug as well and I can buy myself more shiny stuff), my trouble and strife announced today that her life would be significantly improved if she had a little 125 to run about on.
Now, this is an idea that I had been kind of flirting with for a while anyway and I am thinking along the lines of picking up an RG or NSR, or even an RS125, which is in need of some TLC but not too far from roadworthy as a bit of a project come runaround/toy for her. Has anyone got any advice to offer (apart from don't) or experience in such matters. I can tell one end of toolbox from the other and electrics are my speciality so I think that is pretty good ground to start from.
Better still is there anyone out there in southern UK who has a suitable bike that they would just love to unload onto a wannabe serial tinkerer (looking at a budget of around £200 - £300).

Get an Yammy RXS100. Good learner, nice seating posistion, and easy to work on. If you get her any of what you mentioned she might be put off because of the prone seating position. All decent enougth bikes though. But if that is what she wants then the RS125 is a good choice but it will have been thrashed. The NSR, for that sort of price will be the old shape (boxey and the single headlight) They move quicker when you put a proper exhaust on.. The RG?? I haven't ridden one of them since 91 and that was because I blew the engine up (snapped the conrod and sashed the piston into a million bits) It was great up until then
They are all failry good bikes but for a budget of £300 dont expect a lot (unless you are lucky)
You could get lucky here

By all means get one of the likes to tinker with - but don't encourage Mrs to use one as a learner bike - tis not known as very learner friendly

Many thanks for the replies but you seem to be missing the point.
The fact is, like I said, this is an idea I have had at the back of my mind for a while now. The real plan is to relive a bit of my youth - when I was 16 or 17 the bikes to be seen on as a learner where your RG's, NSRs and TZR's and most of us could never afford them (much the same as the recent interest in RD350 Lc's and the like, but half a generation later). Now is my chance to get one of them in my garage, with the Mrs as justification for buying another bike.
I appreciate what you are saying about them not being the best learner bikes around but the majority of 17 year olds that learned on them came through the experience relatively unscathed and they rode like idiots for the most part so my AHEM more mature wife should be OK.

Probably cheaper than a divorce.

Can't recommend the RXS highly enough, I rode mine for 3½ years, went touring in Normandy on it with my club. Great little bike, handles well, not only a learner bike but a teacher!
Loved it so much I shall never part with it, it's awaiting rebuilding in my shed!
Oh and by the way - get anything you like as a project but your other half wants a bike that's fit to ride - now!
Only downside of the RXS is that it's 998cc and as such no good for taking the test on but she could use a school 125 for that.

AR125. Mini GPZ.
Not bad for learning on but can still lift it's skirts and play with the larger kids on the block.
Cheap as fek to insure too

Well, I've only gone and bought her (me) an NSR. And for the bargain price of 365 squid. And I haven't stopped grinning since I brought it home.
Just one problem. Oh, the shame of it
It's only fekkin
