Bike Systems Head Up Display

A bit more discrete than the
Veypor Sportvue HUD (still not got round to fitting mine) the
Bike Systems HUD looks very interesting (watch the videos)
Even more interesting is the choice of wire-frame bike they choose to show with it on their website

They all come along at once
There is a Kickstarter open funding project for the Nuviz HUD.
It looks a lot more functional (if they get it off the ground).
Based on the project funding options, I don't think it's going to be cheap .... but maybe not so different to the cost of one of the Zumo bike-specific Garmin Navigation things.

.... they do seem to be under the mistaken belief that theirs will be the first HUD for bikes !

Think this is a good idea, The Bike Systems one looks to be very useable in terms of being discreet/ user friendly

The reevu is by far the best designed system as it is buit into the helmet - no sticking a box in your line of sight.
I suspect the price will be vastly higher. If you were upgrading helmets it could make sense though.

Yeah - probably the best integrated - though I'm really not sure that is the way forward.
I don't want to have to chuck away a load of costly electronics every time I change my helmet - and as it is, I swap between 2 helmets at the moment.
Certainly at this initial stage, the functionality will evolve and people will want to upgrade but before long it will be sufficiently mature not to need that - basically it'll be a relatively dumb display device with the intelligence centred in your smartphone.
Therefore the add-on route has an awful lot going for it (but it will need a couple of generations before everything you want is well integrated and size and mounting are made discreet)

I agree - as you say it will take a couple of generations of these products to become good enough to switch around in helmets. The initial development costs will be quite large and new generations could be a couple of years apart. - the average helmet life span is around five years, so it could make sense to go with a more integrated option in the short term.
