There you go Dave.

Lots of other little bits and pieces have been done to make it more of a practical every day ride. I'm not going to tour Europe on it but I'd now contemplate a trip to see my daughter in Manchester.

Update

#50 Post by HisNibbs » Sun Aug 11, 2013 6:53 pm

Fitted the R90s heads and reconditioned Dellortos. Oh and new tail pipes too.

The rocker assemblies took some sorting but it all works pretty good so far. Much nicer low down but not as crisp at the top end as it is way over jetted. I can't find my old jet tin and at £3.95 a jet I've done some looking....An 800 still running 175 main jets from the 900, when probably 155 or 135s would be nearer the mark. So back to Dellorto we will go.

Nice keith

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

No battery goes across the bike as standard. This is how it came to me though with the battery where the air box would normally be. I think it looks ok but may try some thing different one day.

I see the heads have the cut outs for twin sparks, not trying to put ideas in your head, but you know it makes sense!

Looks like an awesome labour of love, well done

Twin plugs are definitely on the to do list but I want to make sure these 900 heads with stubs for the 38mm carbs are the best option. Probably the high compression 1000cc conversion comes next though.

I'm very pleased with the way the bike now sounds. Very resonant and deep with a bit of a burble on the overrun. In fact though a bit biased, its now one of the best sounding bikes I've ever heard....

The big bore kit has arrived and is a box of engineer's porn. So what should I do, strip it down again and get the kit installed or re jet as an 800 and enjoy as it is for a bit?

The 'big bore' kit.. Is that the same as having the 1000cc engine instead of the 800? I'm interested in how to make these engines a bit more 'peppy' without spoiling the usability. I've seen some where they're so highly strung, they're virtually impossible to ride off the race circuit.

Some hints and tips would be greatly appreciated. But PM me. Don't want to 'hijack' your post. :smt001

The big bore kit takes the 800 out to 1000 cc. A similar kit is also marketed as a performance (+ 11%) upgrade to the standard 1000 cc motor. Below is what the kit contains ...

"Description Part No. Previous Quantity Price New Qty
UPGRADE YOUR 750cc OR 800cc (1979 ON) TWIN TO 1000cc. THIS KIT CONTAINS 2 * NICKASIL BARRELS AND 2 * 9.5:1 HIGH COMPRESSION GRAPHITE FORGED LIGHTWEIGHT PISTONS. LIGHTWEIGHT GUDGEON PINS, CIRCLIPS AND PISTON RINGS ARE ALSO INCLUDED. MAXIMUM POWER OUTPUT IS INCREASED BY 26% AS WELL AS A 30% TORQUE INCREASE THROUGHOUT MOST OF THE RPM RANGE. THERE IS NO NEED TO ALTER THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST / HEAD / CARB SETTINGS. KIT INCLUDES TOP END GASKETS (15865* 1) (ALL GASKETS AND OIL SEALS REQUIRED)"

The motors is in both my 1000RS and 800 Cafe racer are so soft and usable it would certainly be a shame to spoil that characteristic in search of a couple of BHP. I'm leaving the "Zen" like RS alone for now as it is already has the twin plug, gas flowed and re squished heads. However I aim to get the Cafe Racer which would have started off at around 50 BHP, up to around 70 BHP with lots of low end torque. With the kit and help of the R90s heads with 38 mm Dellortos, we should be close to that. I'm not sure how to describe it but the effect I'm after is the "long shove" that comes from a low reving, high torque motor in a lightweight chassis.

The Rs engine work that was done, including the up rated coils etc, cost the previous owner around 2K. It works very well and is much more tractable than my old R90s ever was. So Will the twin plug conversion is definitely beneficial and maybe you can get it done for less? :smt002 I'll let you know how the kit pans out.

Oh and Dave you are welcome to pop by any time.
