There is no problem with mixing basic mineral oils with either semi-synth or even fully synth blends. Although I'm pretty sure he will have used a basic multi-blend as these are the ones normally stocked in most garages etc..

Castrol R although a superb oil (actually better than fully synth) is actually a vegetable based oil and as such cannot be mixed with mineral oils as the dreaded gummy deposits occur and it will varnish all your engine parts very very quickly.

The most useful thing I never had with me when I needed it was a Universal Cable Kit from Hein Gericke - comes in a round tin about the size of a tobacco tin, with a couple of cable inners with soldered nipples on end and and a selection of screw-on one for the other end.

My clutch cable broke on my way to the TT in 2003 and I arrived at the ferry terminal on the back of a flat bed (well the bike did, I was in the cab!) and one of the bikers waiting for the ferry had one of these kits and sorted the bike for me! I always carry one now.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

Thanks for all the pointers, panniers getting fuller by the minute.
Just sorted the sat-nav, captin bodge has done it again.
Took the tomtom one mount, cut off the sucker (!) & bolted it to a large bulldog clip.
Said clip holds onto the roof above the clocks, well inside the screen out the way of the rain & wind, in perfect view all the time & works upto 120mph ( on a private road). Little bit of wobble becasue the roof is not overy thick, but for the occassional use like this is perfect, 2 seconds to fit or remove & small enough to fit in the jacket pocket ( or under the seat where it now lives).
Hiding under a carpet of grey hair & lard.

Absolutely. A complete life-saver. I also took a small duster to dry the visor off afterwards and remove the streaky marks (cos I'm fussy like that)...

agreed

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
