What do they mean by
Transmission 6-speed, return
?

I assume theyre referring to the fact the chain returns in a loop.... rather than a shaft that doesnt

In black it looks shit, grey is alot better but the bike looks like a ktm copycat

Thank you for your e-mail dated 15 February 2009.
We are pleased to confirm that the Kawasaki Versys has a conventional 6 speed gearbox. We will make enquires as to why the word "return" has been used within the transmission specifications and come back to you with an answer.

I think you're all over-complicating it. It's called 'return' because the gear lever returns to its original position after you've changed gear; it's spring-loaded as we all know.
When I were a lad such a thing was a selling point (albeit marginal, even then). Now's it's so off the radar it's generated this little discussion...

To me it looks the love-child of an ER-6N and a V-strom, that's then been beaten about the head with the ugly stick.
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.
