Going on hols on Friday. Heading to the Lakes first. Jules in the car and I'm taking the bike. On Sunday the plan is to ride into Dumfries and Galloway for a couple of days before hooking up with old friends and back to the Penrith on Tuesday. Got a bit of a plan but any ideas for "must see" stops will be welcome.

The route is basically, hug the coast from Dumfries, round to Kircudbright, then on to Newton, Wigtown and an overnight stop at Isle of Withorn.
Day 2 is hug the coast to Port William then Stranraer then Girvan then back down and cut through Galloway Forest to St John's Town and on to my mates place near Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill.

Plenty of leasure time cos Jules will be on the back and only planning about 150 miles per day.

I was in the area a few years ago, if I remember correct the roads through the gallow way forest were pretty special.

Really good up there, major roads pretty open and sweeping although there are some idiot car overtakers, nice views out to the sea. I imagine you'll take the A710 and 171 alternative to the A75 it takes you past a nice sandy bay called Sandyhills, not much there but a nice bay all the same, bit further on before Dalbeattie there's a really nice small costal village called Kipford, worth a detor. I mainly go mountainbiking at the 7 Stanes but they do nice forrest walks from the centres too, Dalbeattie, Kirroughtree and Mabie. Kirkubright is a really nice stopover

we go there every other weekend as we have a caravan at loch ken just outside castle douglas and the roads are great kipfords a good place for lunch at the anchor the road from castle douglas past loch ken up to ayre is a cracker .and the micro brewery in castle douglas is a must visit.would have been there now if the forcast had got it rite its been nice there today but was forcast bad storms

Well we had a great trip. Weather was very good apart from the home run on tuesday from Thornhill to Penrith. Lunch (beef roast)at Auchencairn on Sunday was amazing - overnight at Isle of Whithorn (beautiful - shame about the tennis result). Monday was up to Port Patrick then Girvan - lovely road to ride with a pillion views of Isle of Mann and Ailsacraig - then back through the Galloway Forest park. Can't wait to go back - Not particularly good pics but you get the drift.
