Gurston Down Sunday 17th July
Last weekend was the second visit to Gurston Down this year. The NHCA goes there twice a year, so there's not much chance to get it right...
At the last meeting I'd set a new class record (and won the class) and taken third overall, so was hoping for a similar, or better, result.
It was bloody windy, so the big bikes have a bit of an advantage over the pesky supermotos on the flatout run to the finish line. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get close to my record from the last visit (30.30s vs 30.08s) due to the strong headwind - finish line speeds were down almost 10mph. The Falclimber was touching 102mph over the line this time, where last time it was nudging 112mph. Everyone was similarly affected.
No new records, but first in class and qualified first with fastest time of the day going into the top-ten run-off. Now, I always seem to struggle with launching the bike at Gurston - specifically in the top-ten run-off. I either wheelie too much or miss gears. This time I kept the wheelies under control but fluffed the 2-3rd gear change - mucking up my speed into the first sweeping left. Despite riding as hard as I could to try and make up for the missed gear, the best I could manage was third overall.
A bit of a shame having qualified first but those are the breaks. Giving the bike a clean and check over earlier in the week, I found that the left foot peg had come slightly loose. This made the gear lever selection quite wobbly to say the least - the cause of my missed gears? Maybe.
The Falclimber is currently leading the NHCA 1300 class and running a close third overall in the national championship.
The next outing is to Curborough this coming weekend - 30/31 July - so if anyone fancies coming along then please do. Griff from Aprilia Performance is coming on Saturday night for a few beers and then for the championship round on the sunday.
Maybe see some of you there - details are here http://www.nhca.co.uk/Courses/Curborough/Curborough.htm
Curborough is just north of Lichfield, near Birmingham.

Well, the Falclimber is going well this season. This weekend just gone we were at Mamhead in Exeter - a beautiful country house in a lovely setting.
The track itself is the driveway to the house and about as twisty a stretch of tarmac as you could make it - and it's lined with trees and a healthy amount of Armco to top it off.
The Falclimber took a class win, reset the class record and went on to take second overall in the top-ten run-off against the supermoto machines.
The next round is this coming bank holiday weekend at Harewood nr Leeds. The meeting kicks off on Sunday 28th starting with practise at 0900. If anybody fancies coming along we've got three or four tickets going spare.
Please come along and say hi.
