Club Aprilia Meet 2009

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Thu May 28, 2009 9:35 am

Final messages had been exchanged, camping gear had been packed. Final words with the loved ones - Daddy was off to play with bikes again!

Yes, that annual week end of aprilia related silliness was here again, and this time we were down in hertfordshire, at a sports club that did have a bar.
(Rest assured, most were there for the bar, not for the sports facilities!)

I had arranged to ride down with some folks I had not met before, but knew through the assorted aprilia forums. I had loaded the falco up with the full luggage amount - the bike was fairly well loaded but the wolfman beta tail bag was very effective - all the weight kept central and low so handling remained sublime. Also - I wanted to take a full load of luggage as a trial run before a small tour I am planning in late June.

Image

Anyway, rode down to Diss, enjoying the glorious sunshine and the relatively quiet roads - and checking out the handling due to the load. Got down to Diss in good time and waited for folks to arrive. Right on time folks started to arrive - PhilH, my contact on his silver falco, a couple of milles and assorted other bikes - triumph, ducati etc. All shook hands, introduced ourselves and sorted the route out.

The run down was steady and I would just like to say how nice it was to have a group of guys, at least 7 of us i think, all riding well together - no bunching, staggered lane occupancy, and no speed demons pushing the pace - just a relaxing 70 odd mile blast. We got to the meet site and sorted out the parking - obviously the majority of the bikes parked among the rest of the aprilias, the others parked elsewhere - they did have one aprilia for company as the yellow falco is also not allowed to park near the more beautiful aprilias but i digress....

Image

This years meet had the normal Club Aprilia stand, and a stand run by a law firm, a portable dyno and Max Moto had brought along a few bikes for us to look at. Also Griff, former ApriliaUK and now uber servicing/set up meister was spanner twirling like a majorette on speed. Talking to assorted folks, a few other companies had let the organisers down - perhaps the biggest loss was the absence of anyone form Aprilia UK, though if the rumours are true, do they actually have any employees left?

A wander around the bike park showed a few interesting bikes - a Nera, assorted Edwards reps and so on.

Image

Falco wise we were well represented - indeed I think we had possibly every colour present bar the ultra rare green beasties.

Image

Not all of the falcos were on the bike park - a part of the campsite had been designated Falco corner - its where Paddy's, D-Rider's and my falcos were to be found

Image

I am sad to say that I was not able to photograph every falco that arrived - for instance Nooj's beast was under a total media blackout - it would appear that the bike was in hiding as dear old Uncle Nooj had been helping out probationer coppers again. He is nice liek that. The local station hears his bike start up and they rush to get the new baby filth woken up, into clean continence pads and uniform and then stationed ready to wave him down as he passes - One of them will get lucky and will be able to write their first proper ticket after examining his bike. (A free tip for anyone else out there - your tax disk can be displayed on the front of the bike, or the rear of the bike - but definitely not left on the freezer in the kitchen.....)

By the early part of the afternoon most folks had arrived, set up camp for those that were staying, eaten some highly nutritious burgers - and these were proper, manly burgers - just minced dead cow, bread and relish.... no green shit at all.
(I am a carnivore - and I realise that cows eat green shit all the time. I eat dead cow a lot so therefore have no need to eat green shit ever).
Several folks had taken part in the raffle - lost of decent prizes, ranging from disk locks, digital dogtags to some decent shirts and jackets.

Max Moto had brought along a rather interesting little aprilia called the RSV4.

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Now the RSV4 was lovely to see - indeed we all poured over it:

Andy Demonstrating why he was Don Estelle's body double for 14 years of "It aint alf hot mum" lovely knobbly knees there mate.....

and as for:

A Scally checks the security on the RSV4.... "'ere Wack, dese locks are loose don't dey do dey come undone easy like la?"

Mind you, it was not for everyone:

Now obviously this bike was meant to be ridden fast - but a little dig around on the control system showed the max speed attained so fer - obviously on a track or dyno run!
Image
(If that has not come out clearly, it says 187 mph....)

Time passed and the ale started to flow - the noodle bar was sampled and things started to really relax amongst the crowd. Then the night time activities started....

Now the organisers had arranged some entertainment for the evening

First off, and with no expense spared.... well no expense at all, they had arranged for one of the worlds best exponents of air guitar to fly in from Rhodesia just for the evening. His equipment was simple - and once he had finished smoking his michelins he set up and went to work.
To see such a master at work was a joy - I am sad to say that in the inevitable crush no photographs were taken - but, and this will matter to some, the way he caressed the neck of his air guitar while reaching for the solos was sublime. For those looking for a novelty act for an evening I highly recommend him. (I did speak to him later that night and asked why he had included some car surfing in his performance - apparently a car helps with the bass transmission, and his preferred car has always been a BMW - apparently they are the muts dangly bits - apart from at the beginning of September when they all piss off to poland for some reason....)

Then the disco fired up - and the DJ was really getting into the scene:

Image

As he looked around the room, many suddenly decided that they really really wanted to dance to the Nolans - and the pink hats were out in force. I do apologise for those with weak stomachs but....

Image
Theres Lovely that is... all the way from wales, and obviously not the only gay in the village....

Image
A little too comfortable for many.....

Image
Lily Savage is alive and well and living in cheshire

Image
Hisnibs gets all military....

Image
D-Rider gets all coy... as if we had not noticed that personalised sweatshirt.......

Image
No matter what hat you are wearing Alad, you still have a very big nose.....

After those photographs, the camera was put away to spare the innocent eyes of the readers....

The morning after was entertaining..... have you ever imagined what the ground must have looked like after the charge of the light brigade? It must have looked similar - dazed photophobic people shambling around looking for caffeine....

One chap was taken aback when he asked me what the best thing for a hang over was - I replied a heavy night's drinking the night before seems to do it for most people..... Nurses - compassionate? Caring? LOL

The camp site was cleared up and people started to head off home - though I did notice that their engines were not being revved nearly so much as the previous day.....

***

Seriously - a fun time - many thanks to the organisers and those who provided the hospitality - very much appreciated :)

It was excellent to see so many aprilias in one place - I think just about every aprilia 4 stroke was represented!

Roll on next year....

Oh - I travelled back the pretty way in glorious sunshine and I think this last image shows the fun I had.....

Just an update on the Falco colours not represented.
  • Certainly no Oasis Green
Don't remember any of the US colours either (though I've never even seen a Plomb Grey Diablo in UK)
Didn't see a Speed Blue or a Fire Red either (the all red one that was there looked like a custom paint job ... more Grandad's Vauxhall Astra red)
Nice write up so far, Nursie.

Would that be a stereotypically West Indian Scouser then?
