Cos AVG has almost brought everything to a full stop!
Question is - do I get the free version or should I pay?

I saw you'd been having probs.
I haven't. Still reckon AVG is the bees.
You sure it wasn't an MS update slowed you?
Not got IE 9 have you?

FF 4.0.1 here. Not sure if updating that would help.

Have you got the AVG link scanner disabled? That slows things.

It might. I'm a bit surprised - FF usually updates without even asking me! (I spect I told it to do that at some point).
But I've been getting a bit cheesed off with AVG for a while, time to try something else. I can always go back to it if I wait a bit before chucking it out, I'll just put it in a cupboard and close the door.

No it won't - FF3.x will update itself to FF3.x+ but you need to download and install v4.
I really like v4 - much quicker - and once I'd moved the buttons about to where I wanted them, find it a good improvement.

I stopped using AVG when it let a virus/worm/thingy through a couple of years ago and then couldn't quarantine it or get rid of it. A lot of the IT bods I know rate the free Avast stuff.

I've been using Avast for about 4-5 years since AVG started to play up. No idea how it's still rated as one of the best free ones.. The mind boggles!
Anyway.. Avast.. yes.. free one.. yes..

Avast incorporates adware detection at a cost :
Footprint
Each of the free antivirus scanners was conservative in the amount of disk space used, installing 40Mb or less on our test systems. (The smallest was AVG at only 30Mb). AVG installed four running processes, compared to three for AntiVir and six by AVAST. The footprint on the system can be particularly important for those running older operating systems (i.e. Windows 98/ME) where hard drive space and memory might be at a premium. Fortunately, any one of the three meets those needs.
I use AVG and run Adaware occasionally.

No, I didn't 'till I spent a short time getting used to it and moving things around in the interface to where I wanted them .... didn't take long and I love it now ......
..... Unlike Office 2007 that they've gone and installed on my work PC. That's been on there more than a month now and it's an utter disaster. I can't find the tools to do the simplest jobs any more ..... things that I would have previously done in split seconds I've given up on after half an hour or so of searching. What on earth were Microsoft thinking?? It's the worst "upgrade" I've ever encountered in my life ..... by a mile ..... and then a few more hundred miles.
I wish I could convey the depth of my loathing but there are just not the words to describe it .....
