back up software

I have a network disk at home and that came with free backup software ( Retrospect) which is about as user unfriendly as it gets. The end result is that the network disk is full to its 500gb when the main HDD for the PC has only 45 GB on it. When I have needed to use the back up for more than finding an occasional file it hasnt worked.

So can anyone recommend some suitable, preferably free, back up software. Ideally I would like to have an image of the PC stiored so that I could easily bring back the whole set up if my PC hdd should fail ( again!) and I would like to have software with some sort of incremental ,back up of altered working docs every week. But the main thing is that the program can be understood by someone who is not a complete numpty but isnt a geek either.

Believe that is ok

Also once you have backed it all up get a couple of new hard drives that are bigger
