Adding data to external hard drive?

I bought an external hard drive to store my photos and documents on.
But I haven't kept up with putting stuff on there and now I don't know what's there and what's not.
Someone told me there's a program I can use to add everything that's new since I last put stuff on there - anyone know what this is?
