Here's one for you computer wizz's out there.
Even with an alledged connection speed of 1.1 meg. I'm still getting a high ping while online gaming which sometimes gets me kicked
Any ideas on how to reduce ping, if it's possible, or is it an outside influence causing it?

It could be the server you're connecting to. If the server cant handle the load upon it. That'll be the most probable.

Are you sure it's ping and not your system simply not being able to cope with the data? Graphics card, RAM..etc?

Ah yes, there is that..

Have you deshittified your cookies lately, run a spyware scan?
Do you cancel off a load of your non-essential programmes before playing? bandwidth can get used up (does get used up) by loads of programmes even during normal non - internet activity.. Hewlet Packard Printers, AOL, Internet Explorer, MSM messaging, Adobe, your Antivirus, Windows update, and any spyware programmes tacked on the back of normal programmes, will all take their piece of ass out of your connection bandwidth.

Close a few of em down or restrict their access whilst gameplaying (apart from AV!!)

Firefox asks to clean up after a session so I assume it's clearing out the cookies and temporary stuff.
I shut done MSN which seems to help

am assuming that you are using windows xp

what anti virus are you using please?

is it only gaming that is affected?

looking above at the post i made on anti spyware, have a look and see if that helps please

also, lets have a look at what is loading when you start the PC - some of those things can slow stuff down a lot so, click on start button, then run, and type msconfig and press enter/return

click on the start up tab and look at what is loading there - there will be shitloads btw, this is normal. The only startup items you absolutely need are:

ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Your antivirus program (trust me, you won't have a hard time figuring out which one is your antivirus program. It is pretty obvious!)

next up, lets measure the actual speed you are getting - head to http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and see if that measures up

next if there is nothing wrong there, and the speed is correct, and you have no obvious bandwidth hogging software that is running all the time, lets look at the actual ping rate -http://pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp has a nice little tool for that, be aware though that your firewall may well be blocking it! For this test only, and do not have anything else running, disable your firewall and run the test.

Let us know how you get on with all those - I suspect that it is your firewall that is slowing things down, or the modem/router you are using is not quite right

I'm running AVG free antivirus
I have a Netgear wireless Router (cable to my main PC) which has a built in firewall. This is currently de-activated and I'm using the Windows (XP sp2) firewall as I'm having speed issue with my broadband provider, tiscali.
We moved house and the connection speed is up and down more than a blue spring sachs shock .
I have BT coming out on Tuesday to check a "line fault"
Just did a speed check and it was 250 kbps. an hour ago it was 1100 kpbs.

it doea sound as if it is an intermittant line fault that is causing the problem - in normal use, high ping/signal degradation will have no effect, but for gaming, especially things that squirt fast bursts like a flight sim/quake/etc you will get thrown out

oh, the netgear router firewall is good btw - use it alngside the one in windows (It is a hardware firewall, so will not interfere with the software based one!)

It could also be a slow link between you and the game server.

You may have 1.1M between your machine and your ISP, but after that it's all a bit of pot luck.

Try doing a traceroute between your machine and the game server.

For Windows, you need to open up a 'Command Window' and type

tracert <name of your game server>

eg: tracert server1.iinet.net.au

You'll get a bunch of output that shows all the hosts / routers in between you and the game server, as well as a 'ping time' that shows where the slow bits are.
