XP2010 Security IS A SCAM!

Doubtless the techie-minded peeps on her know all about this but I'm posting for the benefit of those like me - if something flashes up calling itself XP2010 Security and telling you there's a virus on your computer - DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING! SHUT YOUR MACHINE DOWN TILL YOU CAN GET SOMEONE CLEVER TO SORT IT!

I tried for hours to get rid of it but ended up taking the computer to the nice man at the computer shop because it was stopping me accessing anything I might have used to clear it, and it disabled my AVG antivirus too.

It poses as a security tool and suggests you buy the full version to remove the viruses/spyware it says you have ( which you don't have) and apparently some people who have been completely fooled and tried to buy 'the full version' which doesn't exist - have had thousands taken from their bank accounts!

BTW admin - I posted this in General so that people who don't normally look on the Gekky bit would see it!

Forewarned is forearmed.

http://remove-malware.net/how-to-remove ... i-spyware/

general advice to all

if you have anything likew this shite on your ststem, stop trying to clear it - go find another pc and search the web... then tackle it with the right tools....

anti virus software will do nothing against malware or rogueware....

i recently had to clear a laptop of something similar - took a while but can be done by anyone imho.... BUT you do need a usb memory stick and a clean second pc

if really stuck, come here and leave me a message

please state what operating system you are running and what nasty it is

i will endeavour to get back to you asap and talk you through it - normally it is fairly simple.....

I shall never attempt to sort anything like that again by myself, it's not a bad idea to cultivate the local computer shop - we have two and one is useless, you can tell just by going in and asking for something simple like a printer cartridge, they just talk a lot of sh!te.

The other one is great, took the machine in at 3.30pm and he called at 5.45 to say it was fixed and if I came straight away he's hang on at the shop for me (usually closes 5.30). Cost me £55 including him tweaking something that hadn't been working properly. Well spent in my view.

Since I got the computer back there's one thing I don't like - the AVG icon had disappeared from the system tray (I think that's what it's called, bottom right of the screen?)
I know AVG is working cos I've checked that it's doing the scheduled scans and updates, and it's marking my emails as being checked. But it's much better when the icon is there as I can see at a glance what it's doing without having to open the control centre. It must be just a setting, but I changed the one I thought was relevant and didn't make any difference.

That was Tools - advanced settings - display tray notifications. All the options on that page are ticked.

Any suggestions?

(BTW I'm using XP Home)

have you got the little 'expand' button down there where the icon sits?mine hides inactive programmes and mine dissappears at times
