Downloading drivers for someone else..

Mike came home with this disc from a bloke he knows who wants me to download some drivers and put them on a disc for him as he doesn't have internet access.

Put the disc in and it sent me to the drivers he wanted but for some reson I can't save them.

Any suggestions as to the best way to do it?

I've downloaded a driver before but that was for something on my own computer, I just want to save these and put them on a disc.

(Not forgetting I'm a numptie - words of one syllable please!)

Where are you trying to download the drivers to? You need to save them somewhere on your computer first, and then save them to disc (I'm assuming you mean CD?). If it is CD, you can't "save" directly to the CD drive, so once you've saved them "add" them to the disc and write the files to the disc, using either the Windows CD writing capabilities or whatever CD burning software you typically use.

If it's floppy disc, you should be able to save straight to disc, but only if the drivers are small enough - again, I'd recommend you save them to your computer first, that way you know the download has worked, then it's just a matter of getting them onto the disc.

Just some further thought:
  • The disc you've been given, just re-read your post which said the disc "sent" you to the drivers, I presume this means that there is already something on the disc? If it's a manufacturer's disc, you'll need a new blank to save the new files onto (once you've downloaded them to your computer :smt002 ), if it's a recordable then the disc may be "finalised" meaning you can't add anything more (again new disc required)

Has it sent you to a web page, with links for the download? What's the web address? Does it open a "do you want to download this file" window, or does it do something else?

The disc I have sends me to a website to download the drivers and I can find the bits he wants as he's sent a fairly specific list. Yes I've got a new disc to put them on once I've saved them.

I know I have to save them to my computer and that's what I'm having the problem with - it offers me the option to 'open' or 'save' so I chose save but when I went to the file where I'd saved it - it wasn't there!

Tried again with same result. Does it matter where I save it to as as I put it in a general folder I use for stuff I'm going to be using then getting rid of.

Shouldn't matter where you save it to, as long as you know where it was so you can find it again (which you do).

Hmm, curious. When it downloads, and you get the confirmation "File Downloaded" with "Open", "Open Folder", "Close" buttons, check how "big" the file was (if it's 0Kb, there may be a problem with the download site), failing that click "Open Folder" just to check that the file has gone to where you expect it.

What filename do the files have? Shouldn't matter, but is it possible your anti-virus is quarantining the files as soon as they're downloaded? Might be worth checking you AV logs to see if they show anything.

Other than that, I'm stumped. If you let me know the web address, I'd be happy to try and download some of the files and see what happens (just to rule out a web site problem)

Cheers, I'll have another go with this info in mind and let you know!

Checked the AV logs, can't see anything on there that would be relevant.

I use a freebie download manager/accelerator, not so much for the simplification as the convenience in handling downloaded stuff.

Ooops! Turns out I'm a bigger numptie than I thought! Somehow I'd created TWO files called 'Stuff' and they were in different places - so I was looking in one of them but of course it was the wrong one...............

So I'm sorry for wasting your time tho it wasn't entirely wasted as at least I knew I wasn't doing it all wrong and gave me the confidence to have another go!

Phew!

Thanks! :smt006
