Hi M8, It is a wired router, I took the ethernet cable that ran into the router and stuck it straight into the PC and voila! I do normally have another ethernet cable that runs back from the router straight to the PC so my desktop is not actually wireless

No mate, you've hit it dead-on. Connected via a wire to the router = not wireless. I'd have a look at your network card configuration and your router.

One thing I did find (although I didn't run a speed test on it) - when I put a Belkin router on (instead of the "modem"), my connectivity was rubbish. Took an age to open webpages, if it did at all. I was (eventually) directed to a tool by Tiscali customer non-services called Dr.Tcp. There's something called a maximum transmission unit, or MTU, which seemed to be the problem - the default is 1453, set mine to 1400 using this tool and voila! Sorted. The tool only works on XP though - no Vista. Might be worth a look
Well after loads of grief and a BT 3hr home visit we were no closer to figuring out what the problem was. That was until the Open Reach engineer plugged in her own laptop using her own modem and voila! nearly 3meg. So I've been down to PC world this morning and purchased a new modem / router and my speed has jumped from 0.45 to................

Only problem now is that I face a £60 bill from Tiscali because the problem was my own and I've also signed up for Virgin cable because Tiscali did naf all about my problem for over a month. November is going to be an expensive month

Don't know why upload is so poor - I'm on cable not ASDL so I thought upload and download speeds were meant to be the same ???

Cost me more money of course and Tiscali offered to halve my monthly charges because I could only get 3.5meg max but I reckon at least with cable I'm future proof (ish)

Yup, lots of emails and phone calls to welcome me as a TalkTalk customer, oh and by the way do you know we do this package, it's only £28/month...

To be fair though, they did write to me (after I'd had the phone-sales people on!) and say I'm paying more than their 8mb package but only receiving 2mb, so they're going to knock a quid off and crank the speed up. In about 8 years of Tiscali membership, that's the first time I've ever been upgraded without having to ask first.

Finally had enough of a fluctuating service from BT.

Had an annoying phonecall from talktalk asking if they could better my service as they only wanted to help people..
I'd just woken (or to be more precise woken up by their call) so was cranky, after asking whether they were signed up to the preference service was met by the reply of yes, but this wasnt a selling pitch.... so they could, even though it was a sales pitch...
Being cranky at the time i told the lad to remove my number from their list or i'd decapitate him were i ever to find 'Alex from talk talk' and hung up.

Got me thinking though and while suffering two disconnections on my BT supplied webphone whilst talking (or attempting to talk) to BT about the problems of my service, made the decision to switch to Talk talk in the hope that i do eventually find said little selling shit Alex so i could extract my revenge. (so far no luck btw) -virgin dont serve my area and sky can go fek themselves, expensive crap.

The guy from TT was helpful (obviously) but even pointed out they couldnt meet BTs crappy claims and wouldnt even try. quoted my line at 5 meg and with the options i required, 33 quid a month. frank, honest and admitted he didnt have talk talk at home as his missus works for virgin, gets paid more, and pays the phone bill, so they have virgin.

Anyhow, have chosen to migrate to talk talk.

New set up due soon, so i'll see how they perform!

well, thought I'd have a look after this "upgrade" from Talk Talk:

Not bad I guees, 8mb connection supposedly.

Get a slightly worse result using the wireless connection, down to 4.5mb. Still a vast improvement over the previuos results though!

7.02Mb/s Down and 1.01Mb/s Up. Thats with o2 20mb service. Again it varies. When i first went for the 20mb, i was getting 10+Mb/s Down. Faultless service though.. Never have connection problems at all.. Not even when i moved house.. :smt003

Oh deary me, this bloody simple migration to talk talk is just dragging and hitting problems as it goes..
They now think itll be the 13th when they go live.. that's THINK... not definate.
What a crock of shite.
They think it was happening tomorrow until I phoned billing and told them i dont want their service, then they got their act together and decided it should be the 13th, phone and internet together.
God knows if it will be seamless... bets being taken.. so if im not about after tomorrow for a while its cos theyve fucked it up!

I think i'll file a complaint once the service is installed as the service talk talk have provided has been utterly utterly pathetic. Their customer services seem to be a collection of people simply placed in front of a computer with a phone and told to look in the help file if anyone asks for help or raises a problem.

What they failed to mention is the fact the customer service help file is in fact the user manual for a Breville toaster.

I am paying for BT Unlimited broad band

apparently I went over 100gb last month

so - cunts have restricted my line for 30 days

I have complained like a whining tosser, but it is in their fair use policy - so I have stated that I think iI am paying for a service that I am being denied - ie am paying for something i cannot get

bastards - has really slowed my torrent downloads - of work related media files


Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
