The browser from Apple?

Downloaded it earlier and I cant decide.. It appears very clean looking very modern, but will it serve any better than IE or Firefox, or for that matter, Google's Chrome..? What sayeth the masses? Yay or Nay?

as a long time apple user - firefox is better

(Is the tabbed support that sucks - you cannot start it with multiple tabs open.... screws me up!)

beyond that, is a small foot print browser that just works - but no where near as well developed as firefox in my opinion

I used to use Safari for everything, but I moved to FireFox because there are extensions that I need for work.

Not to mention FF seems faster and uses less system resources.

Have you seen 3B's browser? It used to be quite good as a concept/prototype but i think theyve spoilt it now with far too much 'Secondlife' style input..

Recently got an imac raspberry (G3??) up and running that I was given, but the internet doesn't seem to fit inside it. Screen size resolution thing is on maximum, but everything looks twice the size it should be and any clicky buttons are all squashed up over the top of other stuff on the page.

I tried to do the AF1 forum on it and the reply box to posts was only about three words wide.

It's running the most current version of IE for macs.

Would Safari or Firefox suit it better and give me proper sized web pages?

Well is for macs has not been updated in years!

Suggest that you click on the apple logo at top left of screen and then update software.

Then try safari or firefox and you should be ok

Oh have a look at foxmarks - it works across just about all browsers

Yikes... that is one old machine. Still useful, though to Internet stuff like email and websmurfing.

Try resizing your fonts down to something reasonable (inside the browser). The screen resolution is pretty well fixed at something like 1024x768, so there's not a lot you can do to change things there.

Hell yeah. IE for Mac doesn't even do Javascript - and that's been around for something like 10 or more years now. Just goes to show how much the IE development team respected the Mac platform. (Ie, not at all!)

Although, if you've got IE in there, then you might be running a _very_ old version of the Operating System. Hit the 'Apple' menu at the top-left corner of the screen and tell us what it says.

I know that an old G3 iMac will run OS10.4 reasonably well. Anything older is just a royal pain in the arse - especially "Classic" OS9.

and once he has updated the software, i think the font problem will have gone - ONCE that piece of shite IE has been ripped out of course!

and he has no choice on safari - its there by default....

Yep, 'tis on OS X already, version 10.2 if that's important. The i-player looks the right size, I think it's just the interweb pages that are massive. I've tried the shrinking of the fontage but it didn't seem to make any difference to the apple homepage, not tried viewing any forums yet (this is being typed on the laptop). It doesn't seem to like the apple website, IE freezes as soon as I ask it to do anything there, which will make downloading Safari difficult

They came with a dual-boot option. You could run OS9 or a very early version of 10. (10.0, I think, or 10.1. Either of which are "not so wonderful".)

10.2 was not too bad. It did all the right things. For a G3 with limited RAM, it's probably a good option.

As an aside, how much memory is in the machine? It takes standard PC133 DIMMs, so it should be fairly cheap to boost it up to 512M. Trust me - more RAM makes a big difference in speed.

Sounds like IE is not obeying the 'font size' commands inside the web pages.

If IE craps out on the Apple site, try getting FireFox instead. I've moved from Safari to FireFox now, and don't really miss Safari at all. (www.mozilla.org should do the trick.)

The only issue I have with FF is that it seems to leak memory and requires a quit-n-restart every day or so. But that could just be me and the fact that I have multiple FF windows with multiple tabs open at the same time.
