cd / dvd problem

An odd one this. The DVD drives on both lappy and desktop have started playing up. Most of the time they will not recognise the insertion of a DVD or CD, but Nero still works most (but not all) of the time. The two computers are connected by a home wireless network and the problem seems to have come to a head since the installation of an iomega network drive. but the odd thing is that the lappy, whilst hapopily using the network to access the www insists that the network cannot be found.
my first guess was that the drive software conflicted with the drivers for both the DVD drives. but how do I re-install the drivers if I cant use the dvd drive?

I think the first thing to try is to uninstall the new network drive, if that makes no diff then erm, err, hmm I'll have to think about that.

look at what drive letter is being assigned to each drive on each machine
set the network drive to be drive z
should then be fine i think
(windoze assigns the next available drive letter per machine... so what is drive e on one machine could be drive f on the next - and if drive e is a dvd rom drive etc etc....)

thanks but the network driive is set at Y and the dvd drive is D already. the network drive is plugged into the router by the way.
could the conflict be in the irq settings? odd thing is that the network drive is now always accessible by ethernet cable though I have problems with the wireless access for the lappy. but if there were a conflict I would have thought I would be having trouble with both drives.

Did you install any software on the two computers? The WD network HDD I bought recently, you can use it without anything additional, but there is additional software with "increased functionality". If you did, try uninstalling that software, next to that try removing the network drive from the network (as wavey suggested), and running the two computers without the network and see if that makes a difference.
Any other changes? I installed some video capture software, and one of the disclaimers was some of the library files are shared with CD/DVD software, so there may be a conflict.
You say they don't recognise insertion of a disc - as in they don't Autoplay, or you can't even access them through Windows Explorer? Can you see the disc contents via Explorer?

They dont autoplay despite being set to do so, and whilst they appear in explorer, if you click on the + to expand them you get a message saying "insert disc" even when one is already inserted. But every so often (maybe one in every 10 times) they do work.
As it happens I have installed some video capture software that came with an Aldi tv / usb gadget as well as both drivers for the network disc and some back up software "Retrospect Express."

Best suggestion then is to remove ALL of the stuff you've put on, and put it back on one at a time, testing the drives a couple of times after installing each piece of kit - then you'll know what the culprit was. Could also use the system restore to get any drivers back to the position they were in before you started all of this
