for the average joe, what are the plusses and minusses of having your own domain and having it hosted. could be useful to have an email address that is not dependant on your isp or on services like hotmail. could be useful to use your website for holding photos. maybe a blog. but I cant think of any other reason.

Storing music files, pics, documents, anything really.Inserting an index.html page (or pic renamed to) at every level prevents unauthorised access of a basic nature as does naming docs obscurely. My weekly finances word doc, rename to mzwkzfinz.doc, etc
A basic filing cabinet, if you like. saves pooter space and provides a decent place to have backup files for your pooter stored. Your pooter crashes..say the HDD goes, you can still access important family files later on and restore them without the need for discs, etc. A bit like the BT advert the other month.
Also allows you to link to pic galleries.. maybe wedding photos that you dont want every tom dick n harry to see, but Auntie Jemima in france can be sent the URL link so she can see them..
etc

Yup, seconded on the Gmail account. I tend to use it more than my webspace for storage
