problem with Firefox, or laptop ?

Laptop boots up fine, click on orange dongle icon, fine, click on Firefox icon and wait and wait as the circle circles then
NOTHING, repeat whole performance many times, or many many times,
Firefox start up page, type in address............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. yawn, watch the circling circle, look at stuff, type in new address, milky white screen....................... Firefox not responding..... shut down laptop

Have a look in Task Manager's processes tab and see whether you have several instances of Firefox running. If you do, kill each process and once all gone, open firefox once again.

How technical are you?

There are a load of reasons why Firefox isn't responding. First off - what's the "Orange dongle icon" you click? (I presume it's a USB wireless Internet thing, right?)

What we're going to do here is check that your Internet connection is working correctly. We'll see if you're being given a proper address from your ISP, that your DNS is working, and that your connection "upstream" is routing correctly.

(DNS is what translates between a human readable name such as www.google.com and the IP address that the computers actually use.)

OK - fire up your Orange dongle thing - wait until it's done it's thing. I assume there is a status window that tells you when it's connected.

Go to the Start menu, find the 'Run' option and type "cmd" into the text box and click 'OK'. When a black window with some text comes up, type in "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and hit the Enter key.

Tell us what it says next to the "IP address" line, and any values next to the "DNS" setting. The IP address should be a number made up of 4 digits, similar to 123.123.123.123. If it starts with "169.254" then your Orange dongle thing isn't working. If there are no numbers next to the DNS setting, then there's something whacked with your wireless internet.

Assuming that you have valid IP address for your computer and your DNS setting, try typing in the following command - "nslookup www.google.com".

If that comes back with a valid result, type in "tracert www.google.com" and tell us what it says.


Oh - have you done a virus / malware scan recently? There are all manner of nasties out there that will take over your Internet connection for their own use.

Wow, that is a little bit over my head so will take me some time to do, I run Kaspersky which is supposed to be real time checking for nasties.
Its a tomorrow task,when Im not dog tired and havent had a beer.

If the dongle thing says connectewd and assuming you have a windows system try starting internet explorer or any other browser if you have another one installed if they work your problem is firefox ... if they dont then your problem most likely is elsewhere then try what Viking says

The only thing I would add is if you are not sure what to type then try saving this in a notepad file or one of us can send it to you

start /max cmd /k ipconfig /all
exit


when you save the file use save as
change the file type to all files and call it IP.BAT
Save it to your desktop and it should give Viking the information that you need to give
