My card reader wouldn't work, then my printer wouldn't work, then my older card reader wouldn't work.

I keep getting a message that says "USB Device not recognised.
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
For assistance in solving this problem click this message"

When I click the message it tells me to solve the problem by removing the device!!!!!

Slight difference with my old card reader (which won't read my new card) - it sometimes bring up the aforesaid message, sometimes not - then I get a message saying "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-speed USB2 port. For a list of available ports click here."

If I click there I just get a diagram with about 6 ports (which I don't have) which bears no resemblance to anything I might understand!

Has the whole USB system on my computer failed?

Which windows?

Update the mobo drivers, restart

Yes - like Pete said, sounds like a driver problem

Ok, so how do I upgrade the drivers?

From memory of XP .... something like

Control Panel
System
Device Manager
Find the USB device in question - Right click -> properties
Driver
Update Driver

Presumably this is the bit that needs attention - but this is where I get lost!

Can't find the printer anywhere - but if I go to the 'Printers and Scanners' file it tells me it's installed.

More confused than ever - think I better phone the computer shop tomorrow before I do the wrong thing and make matters worse!

Well now I've established it's not the ports that have failed cos the OLD card reader will still read the OLD card, and the ports will still charge my fake ciggy!
I spose it would be sods law indeed if the printer and the new card reader both failed at the same time!

what mother board do you have?

I do not think it is the specific ports but rather the chipset driver for the motherboard

if you do not know, then download and install the free version of sisoft sandra - that will tell you / us

then we can, hopefully, give you some specific pointers

The can perform faster message is because you are plugging a USB 1 device into a USB 2 connection. It is an information message.

Printer now working - won't bore you with the details!

Now having trouble with keyboard which is plugged into.... yep, a USB port! It keeps coming loose. It seems that if any one of the USB devices has a problem, none of the others will work.

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to take the thing to the computer shop cos I've had enough and it's a week till Christmas and I've got other things to do - like making mince pies!

If one of the USB sockets is faulty it makes perfect sense, though not saying it is the issue here, that others might not work. Despite you seeing four sockets there may only be one connection. Just like if you had an external hub.
One of the attractions of USB. Connectivity is that devices can be daisy chained. So a printer could be connected to a PC on the one side and to say a keyboard on the other.

This means that if one goes down it MAY take the others with it. Have seen similar on other machines and used adapters to get around it
