I keep getting a message saying "Ad-Aware was unexpectedly shut down..." etc etc. It still appears to be working though!

Anyone else using it getting this problem? I'm wondering if it's a conflict between it and Avast?

adaware is anti spyware, avast is anti virus

try starting in safe mode, then run a full scan

soulds like something is not happy.... and may be trying to close adaware down...

ad aware is not just anti spyware as far as I recall
the later version is here of the free one

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

you may want to upgrade or uninstall reinstall but also you may want to run a scan. If you have 2 programs running Anti Virus they generally don't like it

oh Pete

Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+
400 Million Downloads and Counting

I am guessing you weren't one of those 400 million then ... me either :) :smt020

I think when I first got it there was no antivirus element.

Later I had problems and took the computer to the local repair man, when it came back it still had Ad-Aware but he'd removed my AVG.

As I didn't realise A-A had antivirus I downloaded Avast.

So now I have 2 AVs running? Could be part of why my machine's so slow!

more than ;likely I would try using the stop option for one hour on avast and see if it makes a difference ... if it does you may be on the right track :)

Odderer and odderer. When I turn off Avast for an hour it definitely helps - the really strange thing is that the improvement carries on after it turns itself on again! So I'm doing that every couple of days.

I repeat you should not have two competing AV products running at the same time one should lie dormant and be used for on demand scanning .... but thats just my oipinion :smt002

I know but if I turn it off permanently I'll forget it's there and it won't get updated and.....

I'm old you know.................

The lates is that I thought I might ditch Avast and just run Adaware - but when I scheduled regular scan by Adaware (with Avast shut down) the computer ran slower than ever, in fact was impossible to use! As well as that, Adaware doesn't always seem to be working to scan things as I go along.

The fact is I need a new computer but can't have it yet, so I intend (probably) to ditch Adaware and keep on with Avast - which means I need another (free) anti-spyware job that doesn't also have AV - or one that does, then I can ditch Avast as well.

Really need the new computer but it can't happen for a few months - winter months when I'm not spending on rallying, and building up a bit of cash from (almost) not smoking!

Try Microsoft security essentials

It's free and has impressed me

It's on all the household windoze machines..... That's 4 in total.....

Been running microsoft security essentials on my minipad 2 years now and its only used when away from home on any free wifi I can connect to. I'd recommend it 100% as i've never had any scares or weird happenings :smt023
