oh - budget in the future for 25 quid for the xbox live gold online thingie - i think it is worth it

do not worry about a kinnect..... if you wanted one, it could be added later
... and that's where the PS3 wins - it's online stuff is free.
I'll not be bothering with that for my xbox.

Yeah, the PS3 system is great. Apart from that hacking case last year:

Or you could get someone to dig about in his pile of PC bits and see what he has to hand. I'll get back to you in a bit.

No luck I'm afraid.
I thought I had a 9800 and a 7800 card doing nothing but I can't find them. Which is strange as I still have some really old and useless tat. I'll check in the shed tomorrow but it's starting to look like I've binned them.

How good/bad is an nVidia 7800GT card? I think I might have one kicking about in the attic (but can't promise...)

If you have one it would do the trick just fine. I can't find my old ones. Here's a comparative list.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/fastest-g ... 335-7.html

The 7800GT is roughly equivalent to cards that are selling new in the 30-40 quid range and should be fine with DX9 era strategy games. I had one and the only downside was that the fan could be a touch loud when it got hot.

I've found mentions of 7800s in Dell 530s so it should physically fit.

It would probably need a 6 pin power connector. If the dell blurb is right and there is a spare 4 pin one then I have a suitable adaptor.

If the Dell has a 300w power supply like the specs claim then that should be ok. If not and the power supply has standard ATX dimensions then I have a good quality (hyper) 425w one that could be used instead.

Depending on the card and the monitor it might need a DVI to VGA adaptor. I've got one of these too.

Dell were a law unto themselves when it came to standards but there is a better than 50% probability that I could get it to work. :smt002

I think I still have my computer assembly hammers.

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

You should be very, very careful when replacing Dell power supplies. I don't know if they still do this, but older models had a non-standard pin-out on the power supply block. If you plugged a non-Dell PSU into a Dell board it would fry the motherboard. I believe they thoughfully swapped round the 12v and 3.3v power lines or some such cute little trick.

Dell don't do standards unless they absolutely have to.

To be honest they are a lot better than they used to be in that regard. We used to use them at work and had to buy spare ones to cannibalize if need be.

I'd googled before I posted and that series appear to have a stock ATX psu. Except the mini ones which have a form factor all of their own.
