I was cleaning the bike the other day when I neighbour rolled over on this, saying he'd seen me getting mine out and it inspired him to pull the cover off his bike, pump the tyres, charge the battery and go for a quick spin.

I've never seen one of these in the flesh before.

I was never sure why BMW didn't make a 1200GS like this as a standard model. The paired-down bike is surely a better bet than a huge 'adventure-ready' GS for most owners?

I had a 1200GS, not the variety used by the globe trotting duo Ewen McGregor and Charlie Boorman and I'd never have bought one if it looked like that, no place for hard luggage, let alone a decent tank bag, nor the ability to stand on the pegs to give your bum a break from the crap seat. As for carrying a pillion, well thats not even been considered. Nope I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. :smt021

They made it as a "standard" model for a couple of years but it was so stupidly expensive it didn't sell well.
Journos loved it, but BMW priced it something like 4 grand more than the Adventure (iirc)

Cool but "HP" isn't standard, it's out of reach for most people price wise.

But in terms of what the majority of GS1200 owners use their bikes for, I would have thought this HP2 was a better bet. Less weight, more nimble, dare I say it, easier to fit through gaps while commuting?

GS1200 handlebars are higher, when I used to ride mine into London most vehicles mirrors were a fair bit lower, something I don't think is true of this bike.
The 1200 was nimble as well, far better than most bikes of that size.
