Isle of Man - where to go etc??

#1 Post by bigun » Tue Apr 03, 2007 6:41 pm

Hi,

I'm off to the Isle of Man with my old man next week for a couple of nights (me on Falco, him on his Kwacka). Anyway, other than doing the TT course, is there anything in particular worth going to look at or do? We're staying in a b&b in Douglas and have a full day to burn. Advice muchly appreciated! :smt001

Hi Paul. The Laxey wheel is worth a look. It's an effin great water wheel that's pretty spectacular. There's a Tram / narrow gauge railway runs from Douglas all the way up to the top of Snaefell (i think you have change trains at Laxey, can't remember 'cos it was a while back when I did it). Then there's Peel Castle, riding round the coast is good too. And don't forget to try the Bushey's beer V.nice I seem to recall. It's just a brilliant place for a bike 'cos you can ride at your own pace without having to keep one eye open for the coppers. Don't speed in the villages tho' 'cos they are VERY hot on that!

Have fun, wish I was going!! :smt089
The ride is the reason ........ the destination is just the excuse.

Everything without a posted speed limit is unlimited, so have a few runs over the mountain steadily to get a feel for it before opening her up to the stops. Once the early morning traffic from Ramsey to Douglas has gone the mountain is very quiet normally. Please be careful though M8, the course is very very unforgiving and over the mountain there is precious little room for error.

A lot of riders come to grief every year outside the traditional TT & Manx fortnights,. The roads are quieter and hence you will be able to ride a lot faster for longer. As Tweak has said speeding in the posted areas is heavily enforced and any endorcements picked up over there DO count over here (it wasn't always the case)

Have a run down to Castletown (v.pretty and some nice pubs) and then over to Port Erin, you can visit Cregneash and the visitors centre @ the Calf of Man.
The road on the west cost from Port Erin to Peel is excellent as well. There's also a cracking Cafe on Peel beach front which does the "Kipper" teas.

Personally I can't wait tilll June and the pilgrimage that is the "TT". The Tuono will be run in niceley and a few more "sportsbike" scalps will be taken over the Mountain

Have fun and be safe M8

Wish I was going again!

I was on my GT550 and on Ma sunday I intended to go back to the campsite via the coast road, cos I was going to go back another year when I's finished restoring my 400/4 (a much more suitable ride for the road!) but I saw the sign saying 'Mountain Road' and thought, what the heck, here I am and there's the road! So I did it - prolly, no definitely the slowest thing on the road apart from a couple of cars!

But I'm sooooo glad I did cos it was only 4 months later I broke my leg and been on 3 wheels since!

TT week was great fun, gotta do it again someday!

If you are only over for a couple of days and the weather is good, I would not bother visiting any of the attractions. Just fill the bike up with fuel and go for a ride. Do a lap of the circuit, but be careful. Too many visitors get the bug and go for it, with tragic results. You need to learn the course first and it takes time. No speed limit does not mean no limit to your speed...

Worth taking a look around the south, Port Erin and off to Peel. Having an ice cream at Peel ias a bit of a tradition. If you want to see another Falco, just find the prison. Its usually parked outside! Rare beasts on the island.
