Side Stand (part 1001)

#1 Post by Falco9 » Sat Jan 01, 2011 11:46 pm

Yup, I know this has been covered extensively but my question is a little different.

Today I fitted a 2006 Mille Shock & Linkages, not a bad swap and the job went smoothly. I've yet to set the sag but first impressions are its quite stiff. However the main issue is the gain in ride height. This is causing an issue with the stand (I reckon a 25 mm increase and thats with the shock on min ride height) to the point where the bike will only just stay upright as the angle is now scary (poss 35-40 degrees) so I need another stand but I'm hoping one of you may be able to assist me in sugesting a suitable but "longer" stand.

Is the VTR1000 stand longer than the Falco one? has anyone bought a replacement stand that was a lot longer but still fitted without having to resort to major engineering? If so I'd like to hear from you

I've modified a stand for Rick and myself. Yet to have mine powder coated and Rick is yet to receive his. From the one's I've seen fitted (Andy is an advocate for this stand) they are the best choice for the Falco. If you're interested, PM me for details about total costs, inc stand (supplied to me), machining and whether you want powder coat, paint or 'as it comes' finish. :smt001
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

Just in case there are any out there that don't know the history of the linkages and linkage failures, I've dug out an old post that I put up some time back - hope this helps

I was looking for a thread to clarify what I remembered hearing about a number of reported cases of this with the 04 onwards parts:

Here is just one of the threads on the subject:

Given this problem, I would exercise great caution in using the later linkages in a configuration for which they were not designed.
I believe that AF1 now sell some beefed-up triangles for the 04-onwards linkages.

I well remember how our american cousins reacted to this linkage failure picture, I also bought some beefed up side plates for my Tuono just to be on the safe side.

Aprilia however did conduct a full investiagtion into the "alleged" failure and concluded that the failure was down to the accident to bike suffered (a point often overlooked) This particluar Mille was apparently thrown down the road at a pretty high speed, The linkage was apparently found to be snapped as a result of the accident and not the cause of it. I think if my memory serves there were about 2 or 3 cases reported worldwide

I'm confident that the linkages are safe and there are none of clearance issues I've seen in other threads but until I can set the sag and have a test ride I'm not sure if the geometry will work with this set up, it is a huge increase in ride height over standard. I may try the 03 Mille side plates if these don't work
