Piaggio's Aprilia to enter Superbike motorbike racing competition in 2009
MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Piaggio SpA said its brand Aprilia plans to enter the Superbike motorbike racing competition with a four-cylinder, 1,000 cubic centimetre capacity motor, starting in the 2009 season.
In 2007, Aprilia won both the rider and constructor championships in the 125 and 250cc engine categories in the Moto GP world motorbike championships.
Piaggio officials declined to comment on the Superbike expenditure, but said there will be a return on investment, because 1,000 units of the Superbike engine have to be produced for public sale each year.
A prototype of the Superbike was presented today to a Piaggio dealer convention, while the new 200 horsepower bike will be available later this year.
Piaggio officials said Aprilia plans to enter the senior 500cc Moto GP world championship in future, but there is no date yet.
No details on the number of riders in the Superbike 2009 season, nor their identity, have been decided yet, they said.
