Questions ..starting and forks .....

OK time for the gods to give up their wisdom..!!
First ;- would i be able to fit a set of 07 GSXR forks to my machines and if not why not and how hard would it be ?...I'm thinking cheaper option Ohlins forks and i like the look of the gold / black ones......
Second : - My bike hasn't been starting too good lately , it's always on trickle charge and i'm getting green lights all the time ( fully charged ) BUT when i unplug and fire it up it dies and i get the re-set on the dash................that's always fun !!

.........leave it two hours back on charge and she'll fire up and away i go...
Have change the battery as it's old so thought i'd hit the obvious one first but what else could i do to help. I have read on here something about changing bits and bobs to help the battery and starting problems ...
Once more i'm in the hands of the gods ......

Sound like the battery is old, knackered and needs replacing. Charging won't do the trick when they get like that.
As for the Gixer big piston forks - yes I'd wondered about them too.
It would be interesting to see what needs to be done. What diameter are they (will they fit our yokes)? If not, how do the Gixer yokes and stem compare and what needs to be done to make them fit with geometry that might work?
I guess the comparative length is important too.
Looks as though you've some research to do - it'll be interesting to hear how you get on.

Cheers D , had the bike mot'd today ( no worries ) and the guy who does it is now a race tech supplier and fitter and on his bench he had a set sitting there looking the dogs nuts and that's what started the thought ...
Battery changed as , like you , I figured it was just old and knackered ( sounds about right FOR the owner as well) BUT i'm sure some of you guys were talking about changing some of the parts for more powerful ones to help the battery when starting ? ........Can you tell i don't know what they're called yet or indeed what i'm talking about !!!

decent battery is the key
I am not convinced about the wiring mod....
some say iridium plugs help....
personally, i use / swear by an optimate rather than a trickle charger

Hi Aladin , when i say trickle charger i meant the optimate although that is getting on in years as well so was wondering if maybe that could be the problem ??
Not sure if it was a wiring mod or more of a swap for something giving out more juice when you hit the start button .....

before andy gets uppity and stops dying his badger pubes to swear about the search facility.... there have a been a few folk who have tried different batteries
andy has posted up a lot of very good info about batteries and cranking power....
personally - new battery and a decent check of the battery using an electrometer across the terminals - do not rely on what the dash says....

The GSXR big piston forks will be Showas, and so with luck they might even fit straight into our yokes.
Yes, I'm an optimist... (perhaps)
Seriously, the only way is to measure up. Measure up where the forks are clamped at top and bottom yokes. Measure wheel spindle size as well. Don't forget that going for the GSXR BP forks will also mean sourcing a set of matching calipers. Then there's the question of whether the disc mounting centres are the same as the Falco.
If you have Oz wheels, how are they going to fit into all this? If not, it would probably be easier going for a complete front end. If you do that, will the front wheel match the rear?
Sorry to be a killjoy, but I think we've been lulled into a false sense of security by how comparatively simple it is to swap bits from RSV Milles and Tuonos onto our bikes. With a different make of donor, all bets are off...

No Killjoy Manago but just what i needed to hear , am thinking i may just take a trip out to see my mate and see what he thinks .....he may even let me try the set there but like you said as i have OZ wheels will that be a problem as well ????

Indeed - I was assuming that the conversion might be most simple by swapping the brakes and wheel etc .... but you never know, the Aprilia stuff may be compatible.
Certainly as Pete says, higher capacity batteries and those with higher CCA ratings are available.
I suspect what you might be referring to as a "higher power" item is the stater relay.
It is not actually something that is a source of power but some relays have lower contact resistance and are designed to be able to cope with greater currents flowing through them ..... it's basically a switch with a better specification ...

It depends; if they fit without too much hassle, no problem. If it means a load of hassle, you have to decide if it's worth it. To be honest, whether it's Oz wheels or standard wheels, the fitment is the same. One is a straight swap for the other. But 'our' Oz wheels were designed for non-radial brakes. Oz wheels designed for radial brakes were different.
All I'm saying is that the devil is in the detail. If you have a friend with a lathe and a generous spirit, almost any problem can be overcome. If not, it could get messy and aggravating.

Not seen anything on their Falco Forum but maybe worth a look on the Mille / Tuna-fish forums

Apparently : - Dimension, fork diameter at the bottom of the yolk position is 56mm, at top yolk and clip on diameter is 50mm. Forks for Suzuki GSXR 1000
Ebay'd it so now to ask you clever clever people ........what's the dimensions of ours?

Showa and Marzocchi are 53mm top and bottom yokes
Ohlins 51mm top yoke and 56mm bottom yoke
