White spring rear shock - fitting

I am about to fit my newly serviced Mille white spring shock - have searched the topics for hints "how to". Dremelling the schrader valve is raised - any pics of exactly what / how much to remove? I assume it is to allow it to clear the frame - are we talking about shortening its overall length?

Any advice / pics appreciated before I strip the bike. Anybody got any time saving tips on quickest way to swap the shocks?

thanks! :smt001

Off the top of my head I can't remember exactly how much is removed from the valve, but it isn't alot. You can get the valve recessed, which cancels out the problem alltogether. Apparently some have managed to slot in with no clearance problems whatsoever. Someone should be along shortly to fill in the blanks.

As above

Offer it up first

Then nibble with a dremel - about 2 mm did craigs/hanna's

it is pouring with rain here so decided to swap shocks now.

Looks like mine needs trimming slightly - not helped by there being no dust cap on it when i bought it, so the cap i have fitted is way too big and will now need trimmed down.

Pete - how did you mange to trim it without releasing any gas as the valve centre protrudes slightly beyond the outside threaded part of the valve itself?

Got the old shock out no problem - did you adjust the white spring one to tha same length as the old blue one, as my white one currently set to a longer length betwen centres - old mille settings?

sorry for all the questions!

If you have a dremel, or a fine file, you could trim off the edge of the valve. As Pete says, it is just a matter of shaving enough off to allow the shock to fit with out scraping. Nothing too excessive. This should prevent any escape of gas.

If you do not suffer from Kwackerz disease then I would increase the height of the shock

Really does depend on the height of the rider - it can be adjusted on the bike but it is a bitch

When offering the shock up I would use a piece of Sellotape over the end - and yes the central valve is trimmed to the same length as the threaded area - no dust cap!

Fitted the shock after cutting off 2mm from valve, adjusted the ride height to 2mm longer than blue shock. Static sag and sag with my bulk on it was spot on at 35mm. Clickers to middle settings. Just been for a blast - feels good. Rides severe bumps better - less kicking. Just need to add a bit more compression damping and it should be even better! Highlights the need to work on the forks next........... :smt001

Glad you sorted it Scottie, I had to take the max off mine before I got clearance. It is a cheap, but very worthwhile swap.
Obviously not as good as an Ohlins, but it gives a lot better ride quality and you are not as easily thrown off line on bumpy bends.
The Blue spring normally gets set pretty hard and has the preload wound up to be half decent, so you do get bounced out of the seat a lot.
As for ride height you can go up a bit higher and see how it feels, the turn in will be improved, but this is another good thing about it, the extra adjustability.

Turn in is pretty good as i have already dropped the forks to put the bars above the top yoke. Doesn't seem nervous at all. I am running Michelin 2CT tyres which are excellent. Next mod is to fit lower pegs as I am tall. Winter mods list is slowly growing................

While we are on the subject of shock replacement Iv got an 2003 yellow sach shock and linkage to fit on my falco. Is this a straight swap over now that I have the appropriate linkage to go with it?
