Fork problems

Tried to remove mudguard, snapped two of four bolts. Tried to remove front wheel, one snapped bolt of the four. All parts removed, all bolts drilled out and threads chased.
Now the forks are off I sent them for a long overdue service (>4 years since last oil change) at Peak Performance.
Thing is, Steve says the rod from the rebound adjuster down to the bottom of the forks has snapped on one side, so effectively no rebound damping on one leg. No wonder they felt to bad!
Anyone had any issues with this? Got any solutions? The part number is AP8123830 I think, and £300 new (!) Can get a complete set of forks for ~£350, or refurb'd Ohlins for £550.
He's going to try and fix the break, but slightly annoyed. Falco is the perfect bike for me, but I don't think there's a bike on the planet that is straightforward once it gets past 10 years old.
