starter just spinning

I had a flat battery last week, and turned the bike over slowly a few times trying to get it started.

There were no nasty noises but I did have to get recovered home.

I fitted a new battery today and the bike fired up fine, so I rode down to a mates house in worthing.

Just gone to pop to the shops, and it's spinning freely when I press the button.

Does this mean the sprag has gone?

Certainly sounds like it.

No crunching noises or clunks then? - Just working then nothing?

Exactly, stopped at a petrol station on the way down and it restarted fine.

The next time I went to start it just after arriving at my friends house the clutch wouldn't engage.

No funny noises now or previously, just the sound of the starter spinning.

sounds to me as if the starter motor just needs cleaned and oiled ,

Worth pulling the motor off to ensure it's working ok but if it is it can only be a sprag related problem.

I take it you're just getting a whirring noise then?

There's a school of thought that if there's no obvious mechanical noises it may be possible to tighten the sprag spring. I know others have done it successfully. Search on AF1's site for related posts.

Thanks D-Rider.

Going to pull the flywheel off next weekend and see if tightening the spring sorts it for now.

To add to the fun I think one of the rear wheel/carrier bearings is on the way out too :smt013

I'm getting together all the tools and parts required to do this, the only thing I'm missing is a M22 x 1.5 bolt to get the flywheel off, which seems to be a non-standard size.

Does anyone have a lead on a supplier?

Or one kicking around they could lend me?!? :smt006

try this

Tried that already...banjo bolts, nuts, lambda bolts and extension bolts probably aren't up to the task!!

Unless you've seen something I missed?

not really

I was half joking to make up for feeling sorry for myself today but have you tried these as I am not sure whether you are looking for the bolt or the tool to remove it

Not sure where you can source them but apparently Scania truck wheel studs work. A Merkin from the "other side" found that one out

By the looks of it, they have a website: http://www.bapp.co.uk/home

They seem to have a number of branches

In Coventry, Kebrells are cheap and have most nuts and bolts .... though their helpfulness will vary according to the day of the week or the direction of the wind

They have branches elsewhere too:

On my old Honda you could use the front wheel axle to pull off the stator as the threads were the same size.
I think I read that this was actually deliberate as opposed to a useful coincidence.

Don't suppose either of the Falco axles are the right size?
