Which is the best shock for the falco :smt017 , in that i mean straight swap. no extra brackets etc the swing arm is standard. also is the mille front wheel lighter than the falco and is that also a straight swap, and if so which year is best. I was advised that these are really the only mods i need to do set the bike up for track days. any ideas any one :smt003

Well for no changes to linkages at all I guess the Falco specific Ohlins is probably the best (but unlike the MilleR Ohlins it doesn't have ride-height adjustment)

No, hang on, a MilleR Ohlins from the earliest years when it had the same linkages as the Falco.

Both of the above may be very hard to find.

A Maxton made specifically for the Falco (or other decent aftermarket brand) would also be a good option - though, again, hard to find.

That's why we tend to go for mille shocks with appropriate linkages.

Mille front ends are basically the same as Falcos - same wheels and same Showa forks (obviously Marzocchi forked Falcos have different but compatible forks)

Mille-Rs have better, lighter wheels (OZ) and better forks (Ohlins)

Thanks mate , the reason i ask about the earlier shock is because i am looking for simplicity, i think i will go to mallory and look at the other mod you have described. is it difficult or am i worried about something that is still straight forward :smt017 , are you there on the 9th?

I'm hoping to get there on the 9th - other things being equal and none of the family in hospital at that point.

methinks andy forgot the white spring mille sachs shock

bolts straight in

and be careful with oz wheels - two flavours - genuine oz wheels, and the aprilia made oz wheels - the genuine ones are the ones to have as i believe the aprilia ones weighed basically the same as the stock ones - i could well be wrong on that though

craigs falco will be at mallory and he has the white spring unit fitted

one other thing to consider - budget for a shock service as many of these shocks are fairly old now....

No he didn't - the question was about the BEST shock that bolts straight in. Deliberately omitted as although a significant improvement it can't be considered as one of the best.

The Aprilia look alikes are from the newer RSVR not the MilleR. Besides the fact that they are actually heavier than the stock brembo wheels, the front has a hub that is wider (due to radial brakes).
Incidentally the 03 MilleR has radial callipers and a wider hub although it has proper OZ wheels.

oooo

disagree andy - a well set up and serviced white spring shock will do many here - myself included, fine.

being honest - I have an ohlins - but its far better than my ability.... for Joe Average, i reckon a white spring is a good and economic buy

(talking maybe 50 quid for the shock and 120 for a service and fit - that would be around what you would pay for an ohlins that may need a service and setting up....)

White spring isn't just a bolt-in affair though, it still needs the valve cutting down. So for a good shock that really does bolt straight in it has to be the two Ohlinsis or other aftermarket jobbie, Wilbers perhaps? Hagon?

I reckon the average Joe would be able to tell the difference between the Sachs and Ohlins, but they may not be able to put into words.

Pah.... It's only a little dremmel action!

I guess that we will have to wait a bit but Hanna is now running a WP that replaced her White spring
(I would say that is equivalent to an ohlins)
soon as her leathers fit she assures me she will be. Back riding

Maybe 2013 then..... If the liposuction works

Yeah - what he said - White shock also excluded as it's not a guaranteed bolt-on

(Cheers Mr Shiny)

yes I know it doesn't bolt straight in but I understood that it was ok and just needed linkages and dogbone?

The white spring sachs doesn't need different linkages.

I'll put my 2p worth in. Ohlins every time! :smt019

Seriously though, my Falco had blue Sachs which was then changed to a serviced white spring Mille shock. That was much better but as much as i liked it I always felt it could be better. Rather than upgrade the suspension further i changed the whole bike to a MilleR with Ohlins! (cheaper with the deal i got). The difference is night and day. Ok, some of that will be the OZ rims and bits of carbon saving weight but the range of adjustment in the shocks is excellent and one click change in pre-load for example makes a difference you can actually feel (thats a first out of several bikes, some of which were brand new). It definitely gives more confidence in the feedback and hence such i'm now doing more and more trackdays to get the best out of it (tyre bill isn't good though!).

If you get a chance, try it on either a Mille or modded Falco, you won't be disappointed. I'd be interested to try a modded Falco with ohlins and oz on, I think it'd be superb.

HTH :smt001
