after wondering why I had a drop of oil on the exhaust every morning, I have finally found the fault(s). The garage overfilled the oil on the last service, which accounts for some of it, had to dig out the airbox and remove a shed load of gunk. Cleaned the underside of the engine this afternoon and removed all the crud that was there, and wiped it all dry. Left it for an hour, and noticed a drop of oil building up at the magnetic drain plug by the filter.

No chance of it coming from above that area, it's dry as a bone. Is there supposed to be a crush washer for the plug, as it doesn't seem to have one and I can't find a diagram that shows it clearly?

No - its a taper seat, no washer necessary

Cheers, I think I will just let it drip until the next service in 500 miles or so. Reckon there may be a bit of dirt or something in there, so will give it a good clean out. It's looking quite rounded in there, so may as well fit a new one at the same time.

One I had a couple of years ago, but on the other side of the engine, was the oil pressure sensor. It had perished and was letting a few drops out through the body of the sensor - enough to need a top up between services.

After a couple of months, I noticed the oil warning light flicker towards the end of a long run, so changed the sensor and haven't lost a drop of oil since or had the light flicker.

One to look out for.

I wasn't happy with the washerless plug so I slipped an appropriately sized one on last time I changed the oil.

I used an alloy one. No probs with drips since.
