Recommended tyres

#1 Post by Falconihlist » Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:10 pm

What tyres do you guys recommend for a daily commute of 100 miles? M3 and A303, so mainly flat stuff with hardly any bends. Have been running Pirelli Diablo, and reckon I won't get passed 3000 miles before I need to change the rear.

conti road attack 1

I got 5000 + out of a rear boot

I would say that they will suit you better than the road attack 2s as they are a compound so might not be so hot on the squaring off front....

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Michelin PR2 (dual compound). Also very good in the wet.
The replacement PR3 has just had a good write-up in 'Bike'
It flies sideways through time

I had the PR's on an SV650 and liked them. They were on the Falco when I got it, but somehow we didn't like each other :smt009

However I can't stop grinning since switching to Pirelli Angels :smt007

Have had Diablo Rossos most recently - best tyres I've ever had ..... but have just bought a set of Diablo Rosso Corsas of which I expect even greater awesomeness.

.... though probably not the option for your commute ....

Avon Storm ST2, Debz has them on her Fazer, they started to square off at 6000 miles of M4 and Central London. So expect about 4000 on a Falco before they begin to go square.

Even though they're developing corners Debz says they still feel fine cornering and there's loads of tread left in the centre. And they're great in the wet as well.

(Edit) Shes just checked the mileage they went on at, so far they've done... 13,000 miles!!!! And there's still plenty of life left in them.

Awesome!!

The April edition of BIKE magazine has a test of sports touring tyres - specifically their performance in the wet. Results:

Michelin PR 3 wins hands down

Also good are Bridgestone BT-023GT and Dunlop Roadsmarts

Mich PR2 and Pirelli Angel ST are OK

Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact are poor

Avon Storm 2 Ultra are pants -"Far and away the poorest tyres on test" "Unpredictable and lacked outright grip"

Tester was a national level racer and tester. They didn't test mileage.

I'm running the michelin dual compounds, not sure exactly which one - probably PR2

got a good 6k miles on them and there is no noticeable squaring

confidence is really good (especially when you run the right pressures!)

defintely the best tyres I've ever had on a bike (and definitely the best bike I've ever had tyres on :smt007 )

What was the test bike? Asking because the Storms 2 ultra are very popular on a different forum I frequent (sv650) and people rate them very high.

Old Git on here has them fitted I believe, maybe he can write a bit about them

The test was pure wet weather grip. Mileage or dry performance wasn't measured

I have avon storm 2's on mine. Only done a couple of thousand miles, but the rubber from moulding is still there....

They aren't the best tyres i have ever used, but they are way better than the other ones which were on when i bought it.

They can slip quite a bit when accelerating hard in 1st/2nd, but then again a little bit of slip is always nice....when your goung in a straight line anyway!

I suspect most modern tyres are good, even the poor ones. The tester was riding the tyres until they were sliding - I suspect very few road riders get that far. He had his knee down with the PR3s. Test bike was a GSX1250. I had my knee down on the CB500 in the wet at Anglesea on BT45s, the front let go at that point - though I'd get that in :smt004

By the way, if you are doing a lot of commuting, I would suggest buying a CB500; I can't say how highly I rate these bikes. Makes the Falco feel amazing when I get mine out.

My weapon of choice is a Fazer 600, very capable and manageable in traffic
