Oil leak

I gave the bike a clean today and found an oil leak right at the bottom of the engine casing under the gearbox. It seems to be a very small amount, haven't noticed a dip in oil level since the last service, but the oil seems fairly clean. Had a look at all the bolts around the surrounding area but I reckon the gasket between the two halves of the engine case has gone. Anyone got an idea how much it would cost to get replaced? I'm using the bike daily, so can't afford for it to be off the road for more than a day.

Many thanks

Hope it's not the crank case halves - that's a major PITA.

Look for the simple things first like joe has suggested. A place where leaks are known to occur from time to time is the front cylinder cam cover where the sensor wire goes through - just wonder whether it might be from there and run down to where you've found it.

Anyway, clean it up and keep an eye on it until you've isolated it - if it's just a small weep then it should give you the opportunity to watch it for a while before delving in there.

Also known to happen from around the water pump, so I believe.

Ferkin oil leaks.. Remember that a little drop of hot oil will travel all over the bike leading you on a wild goose chase.. Give it a good clean and keep an eye on.. and hope it's not the crankcases.. As that will mean the bike being off the road for some time.. :smt009

what i ment was if there is to much oil in the engine it will sit in the air box and flow down an overflow pipe on the left hand side of the bike near the sfront sproket :smt002

Another possibility, have you changed the 'o' ring on the oil filter housing lately.

Been changing the filter since new and happily re-used the 'o' ring until last year. Had a leak which put oil everywhere apart from where it leaked from but eventually traced it to a tired 'o' ring.

Oil is like blood - a little seems a lot and you can never initially find where its coming from
