HID replacement

#1 Post by furygan man » Wed Dec 22, 2010 7:02 pm

Looking to do or thinking about changing the dipped headlamp after Xmas, any heads up on the choice out there, i've read not to go over 5000 as the light gets a bit bluey and also go for around 55W, some have also got a car kit and split the costs?

Is anyone thinking of doing this so i could link up with them or has anyone got a link to a solo unit?

Will also be selling my Aprilia 'extended' mirrors in the new year as i've bought the RSV indicator ones, will post up pics but there is a thread on them (in the tech section) and they are also on my bike pics, very similar to stock but allow you to see less elbow

These are probably what you're after. I've used them, they're helpful and provide quick delivery though you may find them a bit cheaper elsewhere.
You're right about the colour temperature - the higher number the bluer the light. 5000K will give a fairly white light.
I went for the 35W version as it's already mega bright but it's your call. My avatar shows the bike with all three lamps on - the main beams are Phillips Xtreme power +80% and look like candles against the HiD :smt003
The ride is the reason ........ the destination is just the excuse.

I've converted the panzer to a HID dip set up and basically I just bought 2 bulbs off eBay :-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-Xenon-Replace ... 3cb36bc2c8

I bought 8,000k bulbs and they are soooooooooooooo blue you stand out a mile in normal traffic

and then a digital 35w ballast from this company

http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-ballas ... p-337.html

Total cost about £30 all in and a spare bulb to boot. It has worked fine all year.

I'd like to do the same with the Falco in the new year. FYI I had a faulty ballast off HIDs Direct but they replaced it straight away no questions asked so I can recommend their after sales service

I ordered the H7s from that website and they were very quick delivery and a good product... I just had to butcher the lamp holder on my bandit for it to fit. I went for 5k, brilliant white and 35W if I remember correctly.

!!!!

was about cars - not bikes... iirc all cars must have standard headlights fitted - ie, no after market HIDs unless authorised by manufacturer

Not me .... but the legality of HIDs is a bit of a grey area to say the least.
If I recall they should really be OE it with an auto-levelling system .... but I've never heard of anyone being pulled for having them. Unless you adjust them poorly and they start dazzling people, I wouldn't expect too much of a problem.

The new MOT laws (future) are a load of EU shyte IMO.. Firstly, I can't see any MOTer being overly bothered about it and secondly, how will they police it?.. Can't see a copper pulling someone over for having a headlight that's on the bright side.. unless of course it is dazzling people, which is already an MOT failure and motoring offence.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handle bars to the saddle.

For certain you will struggle to get a car through its MOT with HID's fitted unless the car had them fitted from new. My son had to remove his for the MOT. However my GS went through the MOT with the HID fitted with no problem or comments (and that was with the 8,000k "blue" bulb fitted)

I'm seriously considering fitting the remaining bulb to the main beam as I rarely every use the "flash" facility. There is no point in even switching on the high beam now, The dip beam is so bright and effective there is no noticeable difference when I bother turning it on. I reckon fitting HID to the main beam will be an inbelieveable improvement when riding on a dark unlit road

I'll definately be fitting a HID to the Falco its just such a great cost effective improvement both for seeing and being seen

I agree re: beam... after fitting the HID to the bandit I never used the main beam... it made bugger all difference lol

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to do the same with the falco... imaging three HID bulbs all on together!

with regard to policing it....

am fairly certain it would be an instant 30 quid fine - so the likes of suffolk filth will have their snouts in the trough with in seconds....

(And as the same law also covers car exhausts - i am hoping they may actually stop feeling biker collars and start doing the local hoodies = apparently a 3 inch exhaust on a clapped out corsa makes it into a "leet wheels" what ever the fuck that is....

..... though I've never heard of them actually doing so - I think this is just one that's under their RADAR at present.
Certainly at present, few bikes have had them fitted, so in comparison to cans, number plates and visors, they are not "easy meat"

My reading of the situation a few years ago left it in the "grey area" .... though probably towards the darker end of the grey. (Which is slightly ironic given the function of the HIDs ....)

Having fitted duel dipping HID's to my work hack Fazer I actually got stopped by the filth last week. Was crossing over a junction and the effect of accelerating "briskly" (causing the forks to extend) and running over the rather high camber of the road I was crossing, the car waiting to turn right flashed me. I flashed back just to let him know I was dipped only to see that it was a Panda.

Bugger spun it round but I pulled over because I knew he was after me and got of the bike and waited. Both plod's came over but it was king dick who said, your lights are way out of focus causing a serious hazard to other road users. As he was pulling out his pocket book, I patiently explained that they are not out of focus and the dazzle was caused by my acceleration and the road camber and he was welcome to stand behind the bike and see the light pattern.

King dick took me up on my offer and he could see that they were well with the law (I know because they were set-up by my mate who is a MOT tester and let me borrow the headlamp check equipment). He then said OK, but you're going to have to do something to mitigate the dazzle when your accelerating and going over a camber. Being speechless it was his mate who said how is he going to do that apart from switching off his lights whereupon King dick realised he was making a fool of himself and they both went on their way but not before the sensible plod smiled and winked at me.
