does anyone use their bike all year round (apart from on snow)?

I have done for the past three years, but this winter will be my first without commutting to work (moved to within a ten minute walk).

I really miss riding the bike every day, but really do enjoy the time I do get on it.

Why do u ask? Is this your first winter? You looking for keep warm tips?!

The 6T get's taken out for a blat over winter.. The Falco this year will be laid up having a few bit's and bobs done.. But yeh, do ride when I can regardless of temperature.. Rain is a no-no though.. done enough of that..lol..

Yeah, this is the first winter, although Her Majesty has conveniently provided me with enough warm kit to keep me warm no matter what the weather is. I've been using it to commute for the past couple of weeks, and despite the time to get kitted out, it is alot more enjoyable than being stuck in the car.

Only nause has to be being buffeted around in extremely strong winds. Rain is no problems, I spend most days exposed to the weather in a turret, so I'm used to it.

Ive never improved on the issued kit apart from a textile jacket with armour and a pair of bike gloves (Albeit with NBC inners inside). To be honest I'd not bother looking to spend money outside of your 1157 apart from a decent goretex jacket.

Have to agree with that, haven't found a civvy version of a dewliner that has lasted yet, and they are awesome for keeping warm and it fit's over everything else.

The guy that did some of my initial bike training swore by standard issue leather gloves, said they were even better when they started making them black instead of green. Preferred the NI ones when he could get hold of them but often in short supply.

Apparently they cope very well with sliding down the road palms down, never quite got around to testing them myself

They were even better in the province when you removed the knuckle padding and filled it with sand. Good old days of public order

due to my pimp mobile eating its alternator - and not being able to find a replacement for a few months, i am now commuting on the falco....


sounds like i need to go find some friends in the forces! my textiles are not water proof...

The NI Gloves are brill for winter riding, the padded bit is great especially when you have a size larger and wear inners from the NBC gloves. As long as it isnt raining too hard and youre not going too fast... wind chill hurts!

Theyre also brilliant for taking off wing mirrors in London..

Not seen any about for a while and the ones in my shed are well past the sell by date, fragged to bits by barbed wire.

What is this 'snow' and 'sleet' of which you speak? Those things are beyond my understanding...

So, without having to join up, how do I get hold of this wonderful "biking kit" that's not available to the rest of us "through the year" bikers ?

Do army surplus stores still exist? Do they have this stuff in them?

and what is it in english, not pongo slang!
